Ambient Occlusion is a lighting technique which is used to fake Global Illumination and will give an impression of better lighting in your renders by enhancing shadowing effects in certain areas on a model. In this tutorial we'll show you how to render out a separate Ambient Occlusion layer in Mental Ray in addition to a master layer using Maya's render layers. These two layers are then composited together in Photoshop.
We also take a look at some of the different attributes for the Ambient Occlusion node in Mental Ray and how you can adjust your settings for the best result when rendering with this technique.
If you want to know more about working with render layers in Maya we have a complete tutorial on this topic called Render Layers in Production which also covers compositing in After Effects.
