Creating Amphibians in Maya - The Tree Frog
Key Features
In this tutorial set covering modeling and texturing we'll create the green tree frog you can see in the image above. This is a good project to follow along with for new users as the modeling and UV layout is not too demanding and you will get a nice end result as well as have some fun modeling in Maya.

We follow reference images and start off with NURBS primitives to sculpt out the complete frog head and body with legs which we convert to polygons to combine and merge. We cut out parts of the head geometry to be able to add a second piece which creates the mouth of the frog using polygon modeling tools and techniques. To get realistic amphibian feet and create the area around the eye the mesh is converted to sub d's for some detail sculpting and we discuss what makes a model like this look faithful to the real world. The techniques presented in this tutorial can be used to model any type of amphibians in Maya such as salamanders or toads.

The frog is then UV mapped and we unwrap, move and sew UV's in the UV texture editor before bringing the final UV map into Photoshop for texture painting. We make color maps working in layers and add small organic details like freckles and other imperfections and use shaders to get the large black eyes. Amphibians don't have a lot of roughness on their skin, but to get some more realism added to our character we add a very skight bump map as well as a spec map which is commonly used on organic characters to get highlights on skin to appear where you want them.

Creating the tree frog you'll get a good overview of Maya's three geometry types, as well as learn how to work in the UV texture editor and create texture maps in Photoshop.
