Haunted House - Cartoon Exterior in Maya
Key Features
In this entertaining project we create a creepy cartoon style Haunted House and our final model is based on a single concept sketch. We go through the fundamental principles of NURBS and Polygon modeling where we start off with a basic concept sketch and progress to a fully textured and lit scene. If you're new to Maya this tutorial is a good place to start as it will give you a general overview of a lot of different tools and techniques, while working towards a nice looking end result.

During the modeling parts we teach you how to use the sculpt geometry tool to create basic shapes that are later adjusted to achieve fine detail as well as how to reuse pre-existing geometry by extruding, extracting and duplicating to speed up your workflow. You will also learn how to put tools such as cut faces and EP curve tool to practical use and create polygons from NURBS surfaces, and add destruction and ware and tear to your models. Some parts of the scene are done in Paint Effects which will give you an understanding of how this powerful feature in Maya works and can be used to create certain things fast that would otherwise be very time-consuming.

When our model is complete we move on to texturing it by laying out clean, flat UV maps in the UV Texture editor where we cut, scale, move and sew together UV's. Once the UV maps have been created they're exported to Photoshop where you'll see how to go about painting the different textures to apply to your model. Back in Maya we add spec- and bump maps to our color maps for a more credible look.

The tutorial finishes off with showing you how to create the ground plane and background using ramp shaders and adding clouds to the scene. We set up some lights of different types and add volume lights to get the ghost-like effect. You'll also learn some very useful tricks to create nice looking ground fog in Maya.
