Stormy Ocean

Just realized I haven't posted any pics of this lengthy project which I believe I can finally call finished. Here's couple of frames of the short animation I made (will post it later).

Thanks guys... if only I had hardware to handle these kinds of scenes better :/

Takes a lot of effort and patience to do with regular joe's ordinary PC :|

wow!! that is NICE! What technique did you use to do the ocean?

uberstonks 17-03-2005 04:45 PM

Very very cool bud...
And that lightning.. how did you doi that ? very atmospheric

kbrown 17-03-2005 07:57 PM

There's so much things going on that I can hardly believe I ever got to this point. I could propably write a book of it ;) Too bad that the small resolution and divx washes the finer stuff away. Like the rain, and some layers of fog...

Anyway, the ocean is actually a fluids driven softbody plane (needed to be like this for several reasons. one of them being that i wanted to emit particles from the surface at specific points).

The lightnings in the first shot are just flashing lights above a volumetric cloud system. In the second shot there is MR fog which is affected by all lights in the scene -> pretty heavy to render...

Wow, I cant beleive my frickin eyes!

Dude very nice. I see you've used the plane soft body job on this. the similar way to Habib Zargapour who did 'The Perfect Storm' Maya Ocean stuff?

Thanks! Yes, the secrets of the pros book was originally my inspiration to this project and I did have my soft body ocean driven by expressions and with similar controls than Habib explains in the book but later I decided that fluids gives better results (although a bit harder to control). Now there's basically a hidden fluids ocean which drives the softbody ocean via expressions.

I posted a little breakdown of the composition on my web site:

Hey KB

Yeah I have the same book. Habib is a cool guy and probably one of if not the best at Dynamics in the industry today. Hes been compared to Einstein because of his mathematical know how on working out this stuff. Pity he left ILM and went to EA. He did the cool stuff on Episode 1 Pod race using Maya 1!!! but wrote all the dynamic simulations for that, more recently did the car stuff on need for speed.

Anyway I diverse thanks for the breakdown on your site. Nice to see this sort of thing from forum guys instead of it being tucked away at a big company under lock and key!! Keep up the good work
