Can anyone help?

I've downloaded part 1 of the video tutorial 'cartoon dog', but it just appears to be a Jpeg picture, when its size is roughly 50MB! How do I view it correctly.

do you have WinRAR?

Try the VLC player, it's free and exists for any OS.

It handles almost any format, including DivX, which the ttuts arre written in.
