new to this! need some advice :)

Hey people!

Im currently at university doing a BSC in 'Multimedia Technology and design'. Its a pretty cool course, little bit too much programming for my liking but its a fun varied course!

Coming up next term is the module ive been waiting for, '3d worlds' - basically abit of modeling and animation in Maya.

Should be really good, and im looking to continue using the software in my own time for fun!

Im looking to buy a new computer at the moment solely for my uni work (i have a laptop aswell, but im looking for a desktop to sit in my room - more for your money with a desktop!)

Whats a decent spec to run maya with well? Maya will be the most resource hungry programme ill be using (others include PS and flash)

Got my eyes on a few (bear in mind im on a pretty small student budget!)

Seems good value for money?

Or http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=5DKD

no monitor with that, so run a 22" or 2x 17's?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and i look forward to sharing some of my work :)

Hi and Welcome,

The computer is decent enough yeah, the only big minor is the ATI card, if it is at all possible take a nvidiacard, trust me on this.
And also try to avoid Vista home premium, most software doesn't run that well on vista and if it runs it's usually vista Bussiness.
If you buy a HP (XW4600/6600/8600)you can select the option for a XP downgrade.
And correct me if i'm wrong but in the last link( the dabs -link) i think it is a refurbished computer which means it is second hand one with possible downsides too, so not recommendable.

Just some general advice;
When you' re just starting with Maya you really don't need a big budget machine, just keep the systemrequirements in mind;

best of luck

Thanks pal :)

Yeh the dabs link is for a recon system, at first i was wary, but ive only read good reviews of acer refurbed systems so i was thinking of it as an option...would still rather buy a brand spanking new one tho!

At the moment im thinking the 2nd link would be my best option!

Cant wait to get started on this now!

Of all places i expected to find a bargain!

Stumbled across whilst browsing, basically that top unit, but with an nvidia card instead!
