Gloomy

How would I make a really gloomy looking atmosphere? I've got a scene with an abandoned laboratory, with lots of high tech, rusting equipment in the middle of the night. How can I make it look really depressing and lifeless?

Thanks

i would sy lighting is the key to this
it has to reflect the scene it cant be too bright
i would try v dim lights an experiment with colours say addin a tint of blue to some of the lights an may b some light fog or something like that

As pbman suggested, some fog and maybe some particlles in the air to simulate dust would help it along.

I've had a go at that now, I've got moonlight shining through a window. I'm using ray-traced shadows, and they are very 'hard,' around the edges there is no blure. Is there a way of blurring shadows?

Thanks
