realistic shock absorber spring

hi there,

i just want to make a simple spring (not the dynamic's spring but a geometry modeled spring)
that will be use as a shock absorber.

how could i make it move so that the spring will go up and down by the influence of the load it is carrying?

i tried scaling it to the y axis but it deforms the radius
of my spring.

thanks.

ok Olivermango, it's 2:30am and I'm done :D

Here is a zip file with an example video of the final thing and the actual mb/ma files for maya ( I didnt know if you have 4.0 or 4.5 so I made the .ma one)

anyway, once you open the file, you'll figure out how is it done...

you asked about the weight affecting the shock, well you can do that by keyframing the places you want and where you want it to bend... but you'll get the idea... ;)

if you have any questions on a certain part, just ask and I'll explain more.. now I'm too tired to write up what I did... :o

I'm off to bed! :D

i have studied the scene and it gave me an idea.

one more thing cause it just got in to my mind,
how about the spiral spring just like the body of the toy dog in TOY STORY ? what kind of setup could be possible?

thanx for the Ik and constraint setup. bravo.
God Bless You.

The best way is to construct the spring using the animated sweep feature.
Then you only have to manage the motion of the cross section (the NURBS circle) of the spring using keys, dynamics, or wathever you want.
