Splitting one shape to get two

so heres the situation. Im making a coffin, and i made the lid as one part...

so, how can i split the lid so that theres 2 equal parts?

I already trying sub-diving the faces and trying to delete half that way, but i get left over lines from the uneven edges on the lid. I also tried the split polygonal tool, that didnt work, any suggestions?

I think I know what you mean, but is there a chance you could post a screen shot?

A small shaded pic and a small wireframe would be cool.

u can see in the circles the edges are messed up in the subdivided one so it doesnt split the shape evenly.

For the other circle.. The messed up part is under neath the little pulled out edge part.

Go into the side view and use the cut faces tool.
