is it possible to sharpen an edge of a poly object? (I would like the gears to be sharper)

Not quite sure what you mean, but you could try hardening the edge.

Polygons> Normals > Harden/Soften

That's very jolly indeed.

How did you get that lighting effect? As one soon to be struggling with torches thought I'd try for some hints!
