Tutorials WIP

1 Attachment(s)
hi, since I got permission to post my WIP for the tutorials that I'll be doing (mech, t-rex, monster and shark), I'll be posting my progress here from time to time.

If you see any errors I made or parts that should be done better, plz tell me and I'll take a look at it.

So this afternoon I set up the 4 projects for me to begin with (setting up planes mostly) and tonight I did the first part of T-rex (you'll probably notice that I'm quite a slow modeler atm:))

Basically it teaches you to get the rough sideshape of the body with nurbs cylinders and a cone. Mostly pulling control vertices and at the end convert to polygons.

I just finished the first part of the shark tutorial.

This was made with a NURBS sphere, inserting isoparms and tweaking hulls/cv's.

looks like you're following the tutorials very well so far. :) Keep it up!

god stuff!!! the only part i see .. is there a hole in the end of the tail on the dino?

but a good start!!! nice shape!

ragecgi 12-07-2003 03:28 PM

Cool m8!!!

d24e 12-07-2003 03:36 PM

thx mike:)

kevin, thx for pointing that out. I'm sure I made it right one time, but I probably undid a few steps and then forgat to redo that.:o
I just fixed it now, should be okay.

I also finished the 2nd part of the shark.
First it was a bit difficult to follow with tweaking the vertices in the moutharea. The tailfin (made with CV curves and boundary) was quite simple though.

now let's see if I can get this IMG stuff to work.

Edit: thx racecgi:p

hi, I just finished the first part of the mech modeling tutorial.

In the video Kevin goes over all the parts that make up his mech and roughly demonstrates how he built them. Often it's not 100% the same, but it gives you a good idea of how to start.

I tried to model it as nice as his original model, but that didn't really work. The geometry isn't as clean, but it does look quite similar. (or so I think)

very good tutorial imo, since it covers a bit of NURBS, subdiv and poly all at once.

in the front pick, mine is the one to the right, in back mine is the left one.

well done dude!!! great job! btw the mech is by dan :)

d24e 13-07-2003 08:49 PM

ooooh, so that's why his voice is so much lower:o

I don't mean to offend anyone here. Just thought it was because the video was so old, the sound wasn't optimal yet.

thx for the comment, Kevin.
let's hope Dan takes a look at it too:)

Where do I get this Shark tutorial???

Can Some One Please Tell Me Where I can Get The Shark Tutorial??? Video will be the Best!
Thanx ...

BabyDuck 13-07-2003 09:48 PM

avi, you buy points and then go to the vip-area and download. that simple.

mtmckinley 13-07-2003 09:48 PM

Here at SM. VIP section.

It's in the process of being redone, so just get parts 1-3 for now.

d24e 14-07-2003 01:13 PM

Hello again, instead of starting the monsterhead I decided to go on with the shark first.

just finished the 3rd part. you make the top fin and dorsalfin, then add some gills.

the top fin was made with 3 CV curves and boundary, the dorsal fin is a scaled NURBS sphere and the gills were made by inserting isoparms, then moving CV's.

I made a few changes for my own model though. I noticed that the tailfin was a bit smaller, probably due to rebuilding. So I moved some CV's there.

I also altered the shape of the top fin a bit, so that it looks more like the one from a typical shark, not like the one from the ref pic. (it's a bit smoother now)

and like Mike suggested I made a 4th gill, instead of just 3. Also he moves 3 vertical CV's, while I only moved 2 at a time, because it just didn't look right. The gills went too far on the lowerbody.

It's really a great tutorial, I hope you all take a look at it. I'm really looking forward to the next update (stitching)

so here's what I got so far, I added a wireframe pic so you can see the geometry better. Let me know if something looks wrong plz.

Hey, great job, dude. :) I'm glad you are modifyng it to your own tastes. :)

d24e 16-07-2003 11:18 AM

ok, here's another small update:

I did the 2nd and 3rd part of the t-rex.
in part 2 you attach the 3 bodyparts and make the leg. In part 3 you attach the leg and move a lot of vertices to make it look better.

here's what I got now:
http://www.d2lodshop.com/shibbystuff/dinonapart3.gif
(Edit: I just moved some of the vertices around the lower part of the leg, so now it looks cleaner there than it does on the pic. oh and for some reason there seems to be an edge missing in the middle of the leg, thrust me it really is there)

I did a few parts from the mech also:
the gun consists mainly of revolved cv curves and some scaled nurbs primitives.
the body is all done with poly primitives, split tool and scaling.

http://www.d2lodshop.com/shibbystuff/gun-en-body.gif

later today I'll make the head of the mech and do part 4 of the dino.
