many ways

well there are many way............like use softBodies
or particles use field like..gravity change attrib atten=1
try to keyframe the field's magnitude play wid some maxDistance attribute....

i'll try and will put up the results

till then

ANIMATION > DEFORM > CREATE NONLINEAR > WAVE

Play with that on your "ground" plane, and key it to "wave" outward when ya want.

Make sure your deforming geometry has enough spans/geometry to smoothly deform like that:)

Should be no problem, but the MAJOR trick to making that believable is using HI-RES textures, so they don't loose detail when they begin to stretch a little.

But if you position your cam well, and you don't wave-distort your geometry too much, it should look just the same:)

Good luck!

PS:
I was gonna make things MORE complicated, by saying that you you could setup a SDK between the relationship of your characters' -Y translation to the outward "ripple intensity" (or whatever it's called) of the WAVE deformer.
That way, anytime your character stoops down to start the wave, the wave deformer starts deformin the ground, and there ya go:)

...but then I didn't think of how the WAVE deformer dynamic placement would work... so, just ignore my ramblings:)

Anyhoo...

thanks guys! i'll try to do it now!!!
the SDK thing can't be done 'cause this will be composited with real humans as models.if i am going to render this to 352x288,how much do u think the ground texture should be in resolution? is 1280x1024 a good value?
thnx again!!
i'll post up results l8r!

AbsolutelyWhite 22-05-2003 08:29 AM

I tried it! I got very good results!
i'll post picture of it as soon as possible!

ragecgi 23-05-2003 01:57 PM

Sorry I missed your last post, but yeah, I'd start with that texture res, and go up from there:)

Can't wait to see how it turned out!

AbsolutelyWhite 24-05-2003 07:42 PM

Unfortunately i don't have time to work on this now so no result for a month! I am having my school's final examination.Anyway, any ideas how i can composite this? the people will be in Green room, and i surely can't design the whole thing in maya so i need to compine the video with the floor and the maya rendered video.I'll use Adobe After Effects, but do u have any ideas how i can make this more easily?

ragecgi 25-05-2003 12:30 AM

sure, but first, and this is important to how I answer,
when you say, "the people will be in Green room",
do you mean that the people will be on a green-screen stage?

...or just videotaped in a theater green-room?

Just wondering, because depending on your answer,

one way would be easy,
and one way will be slightly more difficult... but not too hard:)

Lemme know.

AbsolutelyWhite 25-05-2003 10:47 AM

in green-screen stage! :-)
thanx for ur help by the way! i really appreciate this!

ragecgi 25-05-2003 09:31 PM

Ah! Cool:) The easy way!

You can simply do your ripple animation in Maya, and then just comp your green-footage over that, add shadows, then color grade and grain it to match:)

Nice and simple:)

AbsolutelyWhite 26-05-2003 12:12 PM

hope i can match it! :-)
thanx ragecgi, by the way ur avatar is a pic of u? looks like a 3d character for kung fu! :-)

ragecgi 26-05-2003 05:29 PM

Nah:) that's me:)
