best hardware for Maya 5

Hello folks...

I am willing to get a new computer mainly to use Maya... which parts should a pay attention to? I know I need a good 3d video card, but what do you recomend? How much memory, and which processor....

I live in Brazil, so imported thing tend to be a very expensive here, so I would ask to keep your suggestion in a low-budget level! :)

Thanx in advance...

Daniel

the best bet is to go to the website of a|w ( here ) and check under qualified hardware. and then you pick the best that meets the qualified you can and want to afford.

but who i am to suggest that - i still run maya on a gf2mx400 card, and i would be nuts to upgrade computer which i cannot take to the usa anyway when i immigrate on august 15th ...

The one suggestion I would make would to get an nvidia quadro fx card or another maya- compatible programmable shader card, because otherwise you won't be able to take advantage of hardware rendering in maya 5.

Graphics Cards

Anyone wanna recommend a graphics card for £200-250? Can you get a Quadro for that price?

NitroLiq 07-08-2003 12:58 PM

MSI Ti 4200 soft-quadro'd up to Quadro 4 700 XGL. It's the cheaper route to go and works great.

gazzamataz 07-08-2003 03:12 PM

Just bought a Quadro 750XGL for a few quid - OUCH! - well see how that moves things along...

I did spot a new card which is slightly cheaper but not on Alias's Hardware Qualification Sheet. Its a Quadro FX 500, the 1000 and 200 are qualified so I guess this one will be too.

Basically I cannot wait to get it in my machine... and the card!:D

NitroLiq, when you say the MSI Ti 4200 soft-quadro'd up to Quadro 4 700 XGL do you mean that the Ti200 was nearly as good as the 700XGL? Cos it don't support Hardware Layers from what I can see...
Quote:

There are many cards based on GeForce256, GeForce2, GeForce3 and GeForce4 chipsets. nVidia and Alias|Wavefront do not recommend these cards for use with Maya as you may experience various refresh, display and stability problems and inadequate performance.

This can explain it better than I can, Gazz:

Soft Quadro

When I put my box together last fall, I bought the MSI ti4200 128MB card and softquadro'd it up to the 700XGL. It fixed a few issues I was having using the standard drivers like the infamous hypershade problems (no text on the shader nodes...no thumbnails in the shader nodes) and paintFX is a bit quicker. It's been very reliable.

thats really cool....i will be buying an ABIT GF 4 TI 4200 128Mb...will it work with this card......and are there any risks?

Just don't slip with your soldering iron, or you may end up with an amazing Useles Transistor Clump Ti 4200.

NitroLiq 09-08-2003 01:28 AM

You don't use a soldering iron, you patch nvidia's detonator drivers. If you screw up, you just have to go through the hassle of uninstalling/resinstalling drivers.
