If your using a poly plane for the image plane, then do a planer texture projection...

yes i did a poly plane ..what do you mean on your answer

All you have done is dumped the texture onto a Poly Plane...

As the plane is not the same size as the original image it will not appear properly, therefore you need to UV Map it, or create a new poly plane that matches the same size as the original image.

There is a tute in the free section on image planes:

Use this as a guide to get your images on correctly.

bad part is when i set the poly plane the same way it still does the same thing .>I would be happy to upload the project and see why it does it ...but like i said i go to poly - edit uv's and then normal it matches up ... if you like to look at it ..not sure if that is right way or not

Not really...

What you really want to do is open the image of the jedi fighter in Photoshop or similar and look at its sizes of height and weight in cm's.

Go back to Maya and create a poly plane to match those sizes. Ensure you check that Mayas sizes are set to cm first (it should be the default).

Once you have created that plane then apply the image to it, it should match without any need to ammend of apply a UV map to it.
