Well I think Silicon Graphics is pretty important in the history of 3D... they were pioneers in 3D hardware in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s. These days, they've lost the whole 3D market to ATI and NVIDIA and spend their time making servers...
And they also bought Alias and Wavefront, merged them in to Alias|Wavefront, which as we all know, made the very first version of Maya. |
Wikipedia has a big thing on the history of Maya

A very important part of 3D history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_teapot

That reminds me, isn't there a teapot paint brush in Maya? I've to check...
|
i don't think so, but one of the inside jokes for 3DSMAX was the 'create teapot' button, referring to the problems earlier modelers and programmers had in creating a simple teapot, the makers of MAX put in that button just to show how easily their program could handle what was once a complicated problem.

gee, it makes me nostalgic for my 'history of computer animation' class... but hell that was like 7 years ago and there wasn't a book for the class, just handouts (which i'm sure i don't have anymore, i'll have to check the really old bookbag collecting dust in the other room =P)

7 years isn't that long ago... it wasn't like when the only computer capable of doing 3D was a 40K SGI that took a few minutes of load a simple scene with a few thousand polygons... :)
