Weird problem with extrude

1 Attachment(s)
Hi--

I'm trying to extrude a rectangular shape along a curve in space. However the NURBS square I'm using as the extruded profile behaves weirdly, as shown in the attached file. I did a side by side comparison with a correctly behaving NURBS circle profile, using a duplicate curve.

Can anyone tell me what's going on?

TIA,

Tim

Hey,
Have you connected each side of the nurbs square to each other?
select each edge of the square 2 at a time and then go to edit curves --> attach curves (make sure you tick "connect" and set "originals off")
any help?

just remembered that you could have a problem with attaching the last edge to the other 3 sides (some of the edge deletes) if this happens select the last edge and go to edit curves --> reverse curve direction. Then attach the last curse to the rest of the geometry.

hope this helped

Wow--

Is that really the only way to extrude a squarish shape? Talk about the long way home!

Anyway, I tried it and got pretty close, but then found that if I rescale the rectangle after creating the extrusion, it comes apart again, this time along one of the edges.

Many thanks, Al. I'm still not all the way there, but I'll keep working on it.

Meanwhile, if anybody knows a less arduous way to make a square tube, please feel free to share!

Just use a curve tool, say the CV curve tool with a 1 liniar setting (to get nice sharp edges) or just click with a snap to get more points in one corner.

Then after youve made the curve close it then extrude.

Excellent!

Or at least it seemed so until I extruded the resulting square curve, and got this thing.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks much!

A follow-up:

I have no idea what caused the weird extrusion shown in my picture. After I deleted it, I fiddled with the square profile (scaled it), then extruded again. Works fine!

Many thanks to Al and to gster123!

No probs, make sure that you delete the history and center the pivot as I think that it extrudes down the curve with the pivot point on the curve.
