Need help with lighting

I am not so great at lighting in Maya... but my class this month happens to be shading and lighting :( I have been playing with it and figured out quite a bit, but my problem is I want to have rays of light shining into a room through a window or something, but I can't figure this out. Any advice or anyone know where I can learn. Any help would be nice, thanks

Click on the properties for the light and place a noise texture as the light color.

no, you need to use light fog. I've never managed to get light fog looking good but that's what you use.

Is it a still or is it for an animation? Cause the other cheeky thing you can do is create a plane that will sit where the rays of light will be, then create a semi transparent texture that is the colour of your lights or whatever colour you want. Apply the texture to the plane and make sure it's in the right place. Render. ;)

You should be able to do fairly simple camera tracks and movements with this sort of idea. What you also need to add is little dust particles etc that are getting caught by the light to add to the realism of the effect.

This technique will be very very quick to render and should give ok results (it may even impress you teacher in time saving and efficiency!!) :D

Good luck post again if you need more help

Yeah, it's would be just for a still image. I've been messing with light fog, but I can't figure it out. It is giving me the results I want, but not very much lik I want it and I can't control it well. But I will try what you said about the plane and stuff. Thanks for your advice guys.
If there is any tutorials on light fog I would like to here about it

Hi !

I'm new here, and new with Maya lighting too.

My scene is a morning forest scene with env fog and light fog to show light rays through the trees. Main camera animate follow characters.
Can you show me how to use your technique into my scene?

Thanks forward.
Sorry for my poor english.

Here is a really quick fog example
Play around with it a little and check the hypershade.
