Mech

Hello everyone.

This is a model I asked my nephew(Pete Fox..) to model for me.
his 1st time to really get in there and model something that was all quads and no booleans involved.
The model was done in maya and took just under a week to do.

Hope you guys like it.

Thankyou for you time.

Mech final

This is the final image.

Looks brillaint nice clean mesh and great textures... the only issue i have with it is the final image the planet on the right looks like its in the foreground rather than the background... There should be more atmosphere infront of it. its also brighter than your mech so my eye is drawn to the planet 1st.

Thats just my view the rest is spot on well done :)

Looks great, completly agree with bigtommyb about the planet.

Would be great to see this model in an actual battle scene as opposed to being stood still.

i like the cross hatching in your textures, looks great. you have obviously worked very hard on everything.

well done.

bigtommyb 03-05-2009 01:16 PM

looking at this again i have noticed something else that looks off.... The ammo belt coming from the body to the gun arms.... its very square and i would expect it to be more a V shape (imagine holding a piece of string by either end and letting gravity do all the work.) But looks great has actually inspired me for a new twist to my spaceship model im doing if i can find time to make it.

Again hope this helps.

Hi guys..thanks for all your comments.

Yes, some of the modeling work still needs to be sorted which we over looked and thanks for pointing them out. i will tell the modeler to work the parts.

As for the planet, well i have to admit that was my fault for not watching what i was doing, I uploaded the wrong image, so here is the one i should have uploaded. that other one has been deleted from my hard drive..

again guys thankyou all for comments and advice.. we will be more careful in what we do..

bigtommyb 03-05-2009 07:55 PM

Looks much better but i must agree with Chris that an action shot would be more appropriate, as you have the static close ups so having that mixed with a full on action shot would look amazing.

you have a dark object in a dark environment, makes it hard to see.., though it has the effect of being a mysterious place.

i think more grit would collect in the metal seams on the Mech. this would make it look more realistic. is the AO pass composited onto this??

hornet1958 04-05-2009 09:53 AM

Hi mirek03

if you look at the back plate it has a sunset look to it and i wanted the mech tobe standing directly infront of the sun, so when you look at the mech it would be dark. The mech was lit up with two maya lights thrown into the scene, one for sun and shadow the other just to punch some brightness to the front of the mech and an hdri(.. created from the backplate..) was for the ambient lighting.
the final image(above..) i had to brighten it for the web. for some reason on my two monitors(both calibrated with spyderpro..) it looked good, as it did on my nephew`s monitor( also calibrated..), but on the web it went slightly darker. not to sure what happen there. maybe just me, one to many DR tablets..lol

As for the grit/dust etc i did think about doing that to help with it sit within the backplate that much better , but again i overlooked it because i was to much in hurry for the deadline( a week and a half..) we had for the poster( 4ft * 3ft) printout with a printing firm.
must say it looks real good hanging up on my wall.:attn:

The OC pass was composited over the beauty in Photoshop as was the spec and shadow.

Hi bigtommyb,
an action shot, mmmm sounds good to me, will have to get to that idea later, as we have already started talking about our next project, will try to fit the action shot in there some where...

again guys, thankyou

mirek03 04-05-2009 10:11 AM

OK.., didnt read the fine print.., i was referring to the renders between the AO images.., the environment was near the same colour.., didn't realize it was briefed that way.., very cool model :)

hornet1958 04-05-2009 10:44 AM

Ok..i see what what you mean, i think..dam tablets..kicking in again..

On the textured renders above(betwen the AO`s and the final image..) there was AO composited onto them.

hope this helps..

"...now where did i put the tablets.."

mirek03 04-05-2009 11:00 AM

yea, mine are around here some where too.., :)
