Textures stretching

How do I make it so that my textures don't stretch. I have a long model that I am trying to model, but it's just taking the texture and stretching it out to fit the model, and squishing it down on the sides. Any one know how to fix this?

Firstly, are you modelling with polygons or NURBS? With NURBS, you'll just have to tweak the projection until it looks right (or create the texture accordingly beforehand so it looks correct when projected onto the model).

If it is a polygon, you will want to do a UV Map of the object, then map the texture over it (in Photoshop or a similar program). There are PLENTY of online tutorials which cover UV mapping, as well as a few really good ones available right here on SM!

Thanks for the help guys. I think what I probably do want to do is tile my texture, so I will try that first. If all else fails, I will have to learn UV mapping, but for some reason I keep holding out on it, but it seem more and more a necessity if I want to texture(go figure).
