Q3A Player Model - Bugsy

Gonna try to do something that I've never tried: a low poly game character. Here's a rough sketch I had in mind:

It will (hopefully) be a working player model for Quake 3 Arena...

Ignore the hands :)
Might shorten the neck too...

Cool looking character.

Roughing out the body shape... It's just a bunch of deformed nurbs spheres and cylinders at the moment...

Still roughing out... Not sure if I'm gonna keep the six limbs...

OMG! You can import your own models into quake?

I thought you could only apply textures (skins) to the existing models.

This is exactly one of the things I want to be able to do, add my own model to a game. I am not a big fan of the player vs player shooters because I feel like rainman as I get repeatedly raped by 9 year olds hyped up on jolt cola and cheesy poofs!

How do you set up your lighting? Are you suing some kind of GI mel script?

kbrown 06-03-2004 05:19 AM

Yeah, you can add them. It's all a bit greek to me at this point but I know it's doable :)

There's only one area light + FG in the scene...

very fast ruf draft there. great work. It has a bit of scare value to it also. I know I would think twise about going head to head with something that looked like that.

Ok, this is the final model. 1096 tris. Off to laying out the UVs and texturing...

Cool, looking forward to it. :) Dont' forget to think about what you might be able to utilize transparancy maps to help with the polycount. Maybe not so much with this model, but sometimes certain things can be done with transprancy to fake higher detail.

kbrown 07-03-2004 07:04 PM

Great! Thanks for the tip... I'll keep that in mind...

Looking good so far dude. I really like looking at low poly models because I'll probably be doing a lot of them if I get into modeling for video games like I hoping and praying.

Keep up the good work. ;)
