Using Tutorials for Portfolio
I'm finishing up the Apache Helicopter Tutorial and was weighing the pros and cons of putting it on my demo reel. What do you think about using the finished product from tutorials here on demo reels and the like?

Guess it's each to their own but generally I've read that "canned tutorials" is a no no in demoreels... imho...
|
Never use tutorial pieces in your portfolio. All that says to a prospective employer is that you know how to follow along with a tutorial, not that you actually know what you're doing.
|
what I would do Is use what I have learned from the tutorial and create a slightly different hele or aircraft...then use that :)
same modeling techniques :) |
maybe more than just "slightly" different... maybe go forward and make, say, a helicopter from the '70s or something, with the big bubble-cockpit and stuff. :)

What happens when you the one making the tuts hehehe =) I'll be using them in my new modeling real hehehe.
|
Well, that's a different story. :p

It might be ok if the reel is for uni or something, but if your looking for work your just sending out the message that you need a tutorial to make a helicopter.
It's like the raptor i showed my brother how to make. It was made using exactly the same techniques as Kurts cartoon dog tut and if it was good enough i'd use it in a reel but i'd never use the dog from the tut that tought me the techniques. |
