1920's Gangster

this is my latest piece, inspired by a the godfather and just because i have always wanted to make a gangster. its just right for your pc's desktop background :)
if you find anything wrong with the image... i keep it to your self :angery: lol tell me and i'll tweak the heck outta it to get it spot on

EDIT: changed the old image with this one, thanks for the help, but here is the full 1080p image uploaded to imageshack to be nice to simplymaya's servers :) so long and thanks for all the fish :attn:

Not bad, though I think the fractal backdrop is taking away from the image and it would probably look better in black & white.

tadpole3159 13-10-2008 11:24 PM

what do you suggest i put back there then dude?

BennyK 13-10-2008 11:55 PM

That's great! well done ;)
just one small thing I noticed - the hands are too short. try to stand in this pose and see how far down your hands reach.

see what you mean and i resized it, how is it now?
i wont re render until GecT gets back to me on a background

Gen 14-10-2008 01:42 AM

What I meant about the background is that I'm very "aware" of what it is, I guess its also because there's so much of it and that there's no falloff so its not really accentuating him, you know.

tadpole3159 14-10-2008 01:58 AM

:mg: yea thanks for that
thats the downside of HD, its so frigging wide

gster123 14-10-2008 02:03 AM

As a wallpaper it fits, maybe have a bit more contrast between the dude and the backgorund, but as a portrait, its as Genny said a bit too wide.

Is that full HD res or is it scaled down, as it fits my monitor fine with quite a bit of rooms to spare?

elephantinc 14-10-2008 02:07 AM

Lol, its too big for my monitor
I agree with the background

tadpole3159 14-10-2008 02:07 AM

its scaled down HD to fit my monitor, its much more suited to 1024x1024 i guess, next render will be smaller
EDIT: what should i do to the background then?

gster123 14-10-2008 02:15 AM

Try out some different colours, maybe just white? Give nice clean contrasts.

Have a look about for soem references.

As for the HD stuff, I run 1900 X 1200 so its got a bit of room to spare

You can keep the fractal if you're in love with it, you can keep it the at whatever resolution, its just that I think it looks flat and its really "in your face". This is what I meant about the fall off. I tried recreating your backdrop texture and main light source but added a few things to show you what I'm trying to say, you can add more lights to fill in some the darker areas if you want :x

You might want to fake some depth of field for it to create that contrast everybody was asking for. I PMed you with an example and I can post it here with your permission.
Also, don't worry about the wide screen. There's nothing in the background so one can simply cut it to fit a normal screen.
Benny

EDIT: Here it is then (photoshop practice for me)

wow great reply.
i'll try that then, make the thing seem more 3d. btw that is my scene in a nut shell, i have some lights on his face, and here and there but nothing special. you have a great eye.
the resulution is just 1440x900 as thats my computer scene. it is REALLY 1080p, i'll have an update tomorrow

tadpole3159 14-10-2008 03:42 AM

yea sure post it its good, I'm going to use the depth of field my self :) but i prefer to keep the colours, but that's just me, im a colourful person.
see you guys tomorrow. thanks for the help so far fella's, you have been a credit to simplymaya
