serious games: new in computing now??

i got an email with the subject "Serious Games: New in Computer Now"
and my first reaction was 'new?? WTF are they on about??'

there's nothing new to serious games, but then i don't actually know the timeframe of when something is classed as "new"

i just figure if i've worked on something like that then it can't be "new"...

It looks like they are saying that the technology's maturing so that it can be applied to commercial systems rather than a specialised application, thus providing a new method of learning and interaction etc within the environment that previously may have only played a small part of the overall game due to computational and interactivity limitations.

As for when something is new, well that's a big question that would take a lot of discussion, stuff is researched for years before being released, so is it right to call it new when it becomes commercially available? Or is it new at the theory/proof of concept/simulation or prototype level??

Maybe they should have used "newer" instead?

yeah i guess you're right

it's not really commercially viable while in the R&D phase

so is it true that military are always the first to play test software or hard ware before its usually commercialized

Chirone 06-03-2009 09:35 PM

i can't say for sure

i'd say if its related to the miliary (like america's army) then i'd say yeah probably...

but if its like the other serious games i've encountered (learning to cook food, hospital related stuff (we worked on something with that theme), or disaster rescue) i dunno...
