Texturing

I am a major Maya noob and I need to know how to apply textures to objects using Photoshop. There are a couple tutorials that show you texturing tips but all of them start when an outline of the object is already in Photoshop. Can anyone tell me the step-by-step process of getting the outilne of the objects into Photoshop???:confused:
