Cannon Flare
 

I am new to Maya but I have worked a bit with C4D and am wondering how to go about making flares that come from a cannon on a battleship...Any suggestions? Emitters?

Also I want to have like a smoke effect too. Sort of like having a cloud of smoke and than a flare in the middle...
