Workstation / PC??

Hey I'm just getting fully into this business and currently starting a school to learn more in depth about it. That is if I don't learn it myself first. Anyways I was wondering if anyone could help figure out type of computer would be good (or at least a good start up) to get that will be specific to 3d animation. Like what type, workstation or pc,? what brand(s) are good? as well as different types of specs for it, if possible. I would normally use my current computer, but it isn't really up for this type of work. Thanx.

isn't a workstation just what retailers call their most powerful pc?

mtmckinley 28-09-2003 05:18 PM

a workstation is just a normal PC... used for work. :D

Then how do we answer the question?

I think the best thing to do would be to build one up so you can talior it to both your needs and your budget.

k, thanx. i knew about a workstation being a more supped up pc, just using them to distiguish between high end and basic. :-)

how much money have you got to spend, if you've got quite a bit check out the "mac vs pc" thread in here and have a look at the spec of my pc (or should i say workstation) and what people say.

If your school gives you unlimeted render time and you're on a budget i'd talior it towards memory becuase when working that's where your see the biggest speed increase. More RAM = shorter delays.

I think that I am probably going to build one. Found some of the parts online already now just have to make sure have the money to do so. Looking into a Dual Opteron Processor board and obviously the Opteron Processors themselves. Probably a PNY Quadro FX 1000 vid card. The case'll probably be this one, The Aspire X-Superalien ( http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage....144-018-03.JPG
Nice case and it'll fit the board. Now is the part of figuring out how much Memory to get for the thing.

was looking at a MSI Dual Opteron Processor Server Motherboard; here are the specs for it: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/produc...&MODEL=MS-9131
for the Opterons themselves, was just going to go with one that is 1.4 GHz 64 Bit and the other a 1.6 GHz 65Bit. just helps with the budget right now.

Hmm... unless you want a really crappy video card go with that mobo since it doesnt have an AGP slot...

and about the Opterons... sorry but you can't do that... technically you can but you'll waste your money because even if you get a 1.6 one, it will run as a 1.4 because the other 1.4 CPU...

so you might as well spend your money on 2x 1.4 and not bother with the 1.6 unless both are 1.6

ah crap didn't notice that, thanx man. obviously gotta look for a better one. still the opterons are a good idea. or are there things that might work out better?

Emo 29-09-2003 05:14 AM

Of course Opterons will be a good idea..that's why my new workstation that I've already started has them ;)
