light section system

hi guys!

I need your help, i try to make al laser triangle with a "point light" to display a laserline on an object. but i cannot change the geometrie of the point light it is always a cone.... :headbang:

i hope you understand what i mean, i will try to make a picture of my problem when iam at home....

THX...

... this is a serious problem because i need this for work to make a small demonstration of a problem....

hope you can help me!!!!

Hi!

2nd Problem.... when is create a new spot light the light goes through the object which is placed in front of it...

i used a standard spot light with

intensity 4.132
cone angle 4.00

light Fog: lightfog1
fog spread: 2.232
fog intensity: 1.818

Under the lightshape attributes check the depth shadows box I think, and alter the number to suit, that should sort it out!

thx!! - you're right i forgot the shadows...

added ray trace shadows

rendered with mental ray
now it works

but there is still the problem, that i need a "triangle shaped light area".
It should represent a spot laser with a cylinder lense which forms a trinangle....

The whole system is a light section system (laser and camera) for measurements (like in the picture attached in my 2nd post)

i hope someone can help me solve this problem.... is it possible to change the shape of the spot light???

in photoshop make triangle (white on black) and map file to the lights color

hmmm... sounds interesting - i will try this...

meanwhile i solved my problem like this:

(1) polygon cube --> forming a trinagle
(2) cutting out the "light" behind the object
(3) reverse normals
(4) deleting the "bottom side face"
(5) now i have a line on the objekt which represents my laser line

hey!

tried to change the topic name.... hmm  ... whatever...

i have new progress, i finished the laser-module...

its simple 3d geometry

create a parabola and revolve it. place a spot light at the focal point pointing at the parabolic surface. make the parabolic surface 100% reflective

I think i might go try that now...

ww3ace 25-02-2006 08:02 PM

wait, I can't get it to work unless someone can tell me how to reflect light off a surface onto another surface

MattTheMan 25-02-2006 08:27 PM

reflections? or actual light, as you would illuminate something with a mirror

ww3ace 26-02-2006 02:42 AM

the actual light thing

MattTheMan 26-02-2006 02:54 AM

you need to read up on reflective caustics with Mental Ray... do a google search on this:

caustics Maya mental ray reflection
