Big T - Super Villain - Robot

Hey guys,
I have just finished watching the Nizzi Robot Design Tutorial from Gnomon and a few doodles later and i think i'm good to go for this challege. Ive also got a fair chunk o free time at the mo too so this one should get done (unlike the last 1).

Expect a few concept shots soon. Oh and the tutorial is awsome. Ive learnt more from that 1 tut than i have from a lot of others.

Ok so progress! We have Legs!!

Also i hate the big panels and they are gonna be re done soon but lots of progress really quickly i love this method of building as you just create shapes that would fit the area and fits your theme. So its really fast and who cares about poly counts >_<

More updates soon!

Nice start!

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with with this one!

bigtommyb 03-07-2009 02:35 PM

thanks g. like i said this method is really fast so i thought i would do a quick overview of what im doing.

1st i just doodles some bots. I came up with a flame guy design that i quite liked so im using that as my base.

2nd just start knocking it up in maya, Nizzi suggests just ripping stuff appart from previous models youve made for all the mechanical bits and just seeing where they fit. However i dont have stuff to rip from so im having to create bits from scratch, so this is my cogs, pistons, struts, canisters, valves...etc.

3rd export to hypershot, its a really nice texturing program so will play around with that and see what i can do with it.

Then its just touching up in photoshop adding bits, cleaning up and just adding the wow factor.

I expect to be done in about 2 weeks depending on how long i have to spend on it but this is such a fun project it might end up an army of bots :)

Update : Torso.

Hello! managed to get the torso and head done still maybe a little more tweaking may leave it till photoshop tho.

Just the arms left. Cant remember if i said before but this guy is based on a fire theme (wait for the arms ^_^) so this is why he has a kinda welding mask this is actually able to come up and show a face but since your not going to see it i never finished the face.

Heres Johnny!

Those who realise the legs are missing they are just hidden to improve performance. And prob add a few lil more things in shoulder area.

More soon!

S*$t the bed!

You going all gun's blazing with this one!

What that gnomon vid think I could do with insprataton and motivation like that!

bigtommyb 03-07-2009 05:17 PM

hah thanks, Its The Robot Design tutorial with Josh Nizzi. He uses 3DS Max, but all the priciples still work.

Ive wanted to make a bad ass robot for soo long but never known 'how' or its ended up looking plain, or too many parts to texture in 1 year lol.

My end product of this will be a single still that should be definately going in the portfolio. :)

bigtommyb 03-07-2009 08:27 PM

Ok - Hopfully someone can help, it looks like ive spent allllllll day on this and its come out really nice time to texture :) however when i export and import into hypershot my robot is on its back.

Any help is much appreciated.

EDIT:

Ok simple fix just grouped the whole lot and rotated 90 degrees the direction it was wrong in.

Here is a quick screen of the theme im going for.

Ok amazingly (ive even shocked myself) its taken 24 hrs.... I think im gonna do another one, more parts this time, bigger, better...etc.

But here it is. I reminded myself that it was a fire themed robot so red colour scheme. hopfully its enough of a villain. but like i said another 1 should be coming up so will try and be more evil with the next 1.

You definitely get the speed award there... wow, and excellent final product too! I agree, keep going, bigger, better... :)

hi Tom

Looks good mate!

THe Axis thing is that theres 2 ways to have 3D depending on how you look at it, either y is up or z is up depending on how you look at a bit of paper. More technical/engineering sopftwares use Z up

ben hobden 04-07-2009 11:53 AM

This looks well good. Could you explain a bit about your material/ texture set up here Tommy?

bigtommyb 04-07-2009 03:42 PM

Hey Ben,
I sure can and the simple answer is Hypershot. Its a great progam for texturing and rendering as it has a whole load of preset textures and you can scroll through them and then find the 1 closest to what you want and tweak. For example on my model i think i used the Chrome Dark Material for the large panels, and changed the colour to the dark red and increased the roughness a little to get a more matte effect. Its as easy as using the fill tool.

All the panel lines were drawn on after in photoshop as texturing these for a still would just be a waste of time. The other photoshop parts include the flame (and highlights) and just general tweaking of the image.

Nizzis pipeline for creating robots like this is really about speed rather than accuracy on the 3d models. So use the program that will be fastest to do what you need.

If i were doing this for an animation then i would have to go in and create UVs...etc. But as im not why waste time?

mastone 04-07-2009 08:54 PM

Or you are the fastest 3d artist i have ever seen or this is a model you have made in the past and you are merely tweaking it.

It looks good though so no crits there:beer:

bigtommyb 04-07-2009 09:18 PM

hah thanks mastone, actually i was really fast in modeling this too i seem to be good at making little nick nacks. Im currently macking a huge archive of them so my next robot should be even faster to make and any machines really!

If i had made this in the past i wouldnt be so impressed with myself. Im still in shock that i made it haha!

Oh 1 more point for anyone who is gonna try this make sure that when you duplicate your stuff for the opposite leg or watever that its not instanced because it gave me a whole load of issues further on.
