Well, i thought i would try and model a head. I havent gotten my organic modeling dvd in the mail yet, but i thought i'd give it a try anyway. Heres my first go at getting the basic shape.

I messed with split poly to try and get rings around the eyes and mouth

Wow, that is looking really good so far. The mesh is very clean, good work.

Cheers,

you'd be better using reference drawings so that you can get the shape of the head in straight away. It'll save moving all the vertices/edges about later. Good start though :)

reference

i was just thinking about that...ive tried drawing some front/side pictures but im having trouble keeping the proportions right. I think i need to get some photos

If I had my laptop I'd send you some decent reference pics.

Try fineart.sk (I think it is anyway) which might mean wading through a load of pages but you'll find reference pics for male, female and child heads/bodies.

Just googled it quickly and found a couple of reference pics you could make use of from the following:

references

the site had lots of refs , but all in loww res unless you pay. For now ill use the low res and if i find better quality ill start over from the base head...i needthe practice.

head with refs

I used one of the sites that you suggested to find a nice photo ref of an old guy. I tried to edit the head but it seemed more trouble than it was worth so i just started over...heres what i have s far...it needs some severe smoothing and edgelooping buts i think its already loads better than my last try.

its good that you started again as the old head was useful to start learning but the new one is looking much better already!

keep it up :)

The Original head was better in my view. It was a much better layout and you were pretty much there with your 'loops'.

Have a look at this one I did a while ago it should help a little.

I was just meaning the general shape of the head was better.
