best way to make a car smooth

I am busy with an honda S-2000 and i made it with poly.
now i wanna smooth the car and i wonder what the best option is to smooth i tryed the polygon smooth proxy and the Sub-D way but non of them made it smooth enough

here ive got a picture of my honda s2000

Have you tried to use the add smooth polygons? You can set the Divisions up to ...well, how high you want as far as I know.

to get a more defined look whilst keeping a sort of blend between soft and a hard edge, what i normally do is a mix and match between 2 procedures.

I bevel the entire object as a whole with only 1 sub division, this will round of the corners and edges a tiny bit, then i apply the smooth function whilst reducing the continuity, this will try to maintain the original design but with more defined edges and corners.

I normally apply the smooth after i'm happy with the entire model, sort of a finalising procedure. However if your working in conjuction with sub-d's then theres no need to apply a smooth as sub-d will do that anyway.

ive been busy with the smoothing and it wont work:(

heres the problem
http://img235.echo.cx/img235/386/s20...thhelp23jf.jpg

as u can see the bumper is a problem and i cant get it how i want i must be smooth but i want some sharp edges

at the 1st picture (left up) it is how i made it with polygon and didnt do anything with it for smoothing

the 2nd picture i use the SUB-d way convert to sub-d and this is the result it smooth stuff and smooth it very strange

the 3rd picture i used the smooth tool of polygon looks smooth but it also smooth the corner that must be sharp

and the latest 2 (on the right) most effective but stillnot good is sellect couple of faces i want to smooth and then use the smooth tool but the problem is then the edges at the air intake and the headlight are still square and not smooth how i wanted

i hope some 1 can help me with this becouse i cant go farder is this doesnt work:confused:

Hey,

There is a tutorial coming up on here in the next few days which will show you exactly how to work with polys and sub d's also as a bonus its car modeling.
But onto your problem you need to merge all the vertices to eachother around the light and front intake then when you convert to sub d's that will get rid of the curved edges, also hit 3 on your keypad while having the sub d object selected to bump up its display level job solved nice smooth car

although I suggest you check out the car tutorial will give you many tips to speed your workflow and make your car look better
Heres what the finsihed car looks like from the tutorial

looks good:) i will try it and i will look if i download the car tutorial but will have a problem if i need points for it becouse i can pay to other country's then netherlands:confused:

im busy with some converting and with 1 ill get this error

// Warning: Nothing is selected. Select objects or components to delete. //
// Error: polyToSubdiv1 (Poly To Subdiv Node): One or more edges is nonmanifold.
// Nonmanifold geometry cannot be converted to a subdivision surface.
// To clean up nonmanifold edges, use Polygons->Cleanup with the nonmanifold option. //
// Error: Command polyToSubdiv failed. Open Script Editor for details. //

does some 1 know how to fix this?

sspikedudley 17-04-2005 02:00 PM

yeah on the poly object goto polygons -> cleanup -> option box set the method to select and cleanup then put the type to normals and non manifold that should sort the problem if it doesn't try this

Goto settings/prefrences -> preferences then onto the polygons tab goto border edges and turn them on then set the distance to something like 3 then way you can see where vertices or edges or not merged and you can merge them manually

Thanks
Rob
