What kind of computer
 
hey there
im just about to recive a new laptop and i was wondering if weather it is ok to use maya on it. i know in an ideal world i could use a computer with a lot more power but im getting this laptop for free so beggers cant be choosers!!!

Its a toshiba tecra A8-192 notebook
intel core 2 duo processor 1.83Ghz
2Mb level cache
1Gb DDR Ram (2 * 215Mb)
80Gb hard drive
Intel 945GM graphics adapter

IÕve heard that video card isnÕt the greatest, you could have some major problems with it (in Maya).

yeah you might have some big probs with the card lost maipulators, no hardware rendering, slow model view moving etc

But hey its free and if your begining maya go for it, but keep the possible probs in mind.

I dont think u want to do highend 3D production on a laptop, do u? Maybe start simple models and finish it big on a desktop. So of course u could use it, as long u don't expect it to replace your desktop machine.
And yes, u might run into window-update problems (GUI elecment that don't refresh properly), but sometimes this is fixed by trying out several GFX card driver versions from the hardware vender's website. The latest drivers are not always the best when using Maya.
I used to work for months with Maya on a NEC laptop when I was kinda homeless. Hard to bring a desktop in your backpack. Besides the ocasional window-update problem, it worked fine for me as a beginner.
