EXPORTING FROM MAX TO MAYA?
Hey guys,
is it possible to import objects into maya created in another programme? i.e 3dmax? If so how? Im working on a project, and to save modelling time, there are 1 or 2 things i need, so i go into www.turbosquid.com Trouble is, nearly everything i always ask for is always available in 3dmax yet never in maya????? :headbang: thanx peeps |
To accomplish this you wood need a copy of Max and the correct fbx plugin (recommendation only - can be found via the autodesk "the area" site) for Max and the same fbx plugin version in Maya. Once this is exported from MAX and then imported to Maya, you can save it as an MA or MB file.
I recommend fbx as its very good and keep all the geometry clean as some exporters will mess up the geometry so once you import is all gone Pete Tong... |
wow! so it can be done then? ...providing i have 3dmax.
Its so so annoying when i see SO many things i wished to download, but they are only for 3dmax. Thanx what is the latest version of 3dmax (apart from the new one with the intergration with maya 8)? Thanx again R@nSID    |
Oh yeah, one hiccup.
How much is 3dmax? Not as much as maya i hope! |
Hopes this helps:
Autodesk anticipates that 3ds Max 9 will be available in English in October 2006, and in additional languages in the future. The Autodesk suggested retail price for 3ds Max 9 software is US $3,495. The Autodesk suggested retail price to upgrade from 3ds Max 8 to 3ds Max 9 is US $795. |
erm ok i think i may have to wait or leave it, seeing as tho i only want max to export stuff! lol
One more thing. I heard maya 8 and max are merging right? So does that mean you can use both 3dmax stuff with the new maya? I.e anything you download, it will work for the one programme? (does that make sense?) |

Wouldent it be possible to download the models you require in .obj format? Maybe off a different website? |
thought i read it on simplymaya funny enough. perhaps i read it wrong.
Apparently in Maya 8, Alias have bought the rights of Max or something and now Maya 8 is intergrated with the new Max. Like i said maybe i read it wrong. But judging from posts ive seen, alot of ppl arent happy with the layout. ??? |
Well I hve used Maya 8 and 3dsMax 9 and I have to say you are mistaken about what you think you read about the intergration.
|
oh ok cool
lol :attn: |
wots maya 8 like? is it worth getting?
Is it easy to use compared to 7, like wot has changed? |

The only thing that I know of is that Maya 8 now can export/import in a Autodesk format that Max can also import/export, in other words the scene files (in this autodesk format) can be used in either max or maya without a third party plug in. If you have a look in Autodesks website it goes into depth about whats changed, new mental ray core, the Autodesk file format being available, and I think some aditional UV mapping tools. Alas I'm still on version 6, if I was on version 7 I dont think I would upgrade though as the new features wouldent warrent spending the money, IMHO. |
And you may want to drop cut_the_krab a note as he has been asking about importing 3ds files to Maya 8 for awhile now. The Bonus Tools for Maya 8 give you the capability to import 3ds files. But as cut_the_krab found it may not open all of them.

And check this for the changes you may be curious about:
