Star Trek Borg Effects

I've always wondered in movies like star trek how they do the effects like Borg implants bursting from the skin or other creepy crawly things moving under the skin, obviously they film the actor first then add the effects, but how do you manipulate a video image? I'd love to try this myself ..... anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial or a demo on how it is done?

I would guess a animated bumb map for the under the skin crawlies.

Actualy, a pseudo-morphing software is used for the z-axis displacement in terms of the crawly-skin effects.
The bursting is merely a combo of 3d and 2d element composites.

The morphing/displacement software most often used in recent features is called:
Elastic Reality.

Avid has discontinued the software, though it is still WIDELY used today:)
