Rigging - what comes first?

Howdy,

I'm a Lightwave guy learning Maya at the moment...
I have a question about rigging -

Because I'm used to Lightwave, I painted the weights in Low-Poly at first and then smoothed, but I've noticed that doing that leaves all the new points (vertices?..) without weights, though they do deform when I'm moving the bones...

So should I smooth my mash before I bind it to a skeleton and paint the weights or after? does it affect the deformation?

Thanks.

smoothing you object after rigging and painting weights is the standard method.

Smoothing after painting weights will smooth the weights to the new verts.
