3D Paint problem: "Error: No object matches name: .color"

I have model with 2 materials, each assigned a file texture. I don't recall exactly how I set that up. I also have UVs defined such that model is distributed on the two textures. I'm using PLE 5.

All this has been working for a while. I created test textures that are just the UVs overlaid on a solid background. The model is for UT2004, and this simple, proof-of-concept texture has survived the transformations necessary to get it into the game and properly aligned. Of course, hardware rendering in Maya shows things aligned as well.

Now virtually all the animation is complete (nearly 80 sequences, plus a lot of UScript code), so I'm moving on to making a "real" skin.

I started with the 3D Paint Dino tutorial that came with Maya. That worked, and I was able
to get it to work on my model. My tests were again proof of concept, and didn't represent anything I actually wanted. So I deleted the image files Maya produced in order to start with a clean slate and do it for real, but now I can't assign the textures. Instead, I get the error message "Error: No object matches name: .color".

Even stranger (perhaps not so strange to experienced people) even before attempting to assign textures the 3D Paint tool acts like it will work on the parts of the model assigned to texture A. As soon as I start, and *before* assigning textures, the tool has the open circle and "P" when on texture A, but it's a circle with an "X" on texture B. But when I try to assign textures I get the message "Error: No object matches name: .color".But even though the tool says I should be able to paint on the texture A area, it doesn't. It tries, and I see the image flicker a bit as it tries to update itself, but nothing actually makes it onto the model.

Other notes:
* I have multiple copies of my model file, each with different animations, and I get this error on all of them.
* I noticed that in the Dino tutorial the model looks de-selected after starting 3D Paint, but my model still looks selected. I don't know if that's significant, but I thought I'd
mention it.

Does anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong and how I might correct this? Starting from scratch with the textures isn't an option because I don't if that would screw up all the work I've already done on the animation. I can fumble through with what I have, but there are some lines that I just can't get straight when working on the flats.
