Paint Effects: Where are the leaf shapes/textures defined?

Hi,
While using the 'Oak.mel' Paint Effects brush, it seems the leaves are way too dark in comparison to the branches (even in a brightly lit scene with a lot of ambient light, they look like they're dark.)
So I went to edit the Leaves (under the Tubes parameter of the brush), but although you can edit the 2 main colors, there's no way to define the texture or shape of the leaf.
If I switch to, say, a Shrub brush, the leaves seem correctly proportionately bright, but I couldn't see any parameters that defined the fundamental shape and texture once again.
I've played with all the leaf parameters and although they give you lots of variation, you still can't determine the raw shape of the leaf.

Is this a case where you have to choose a brush by memorising some hard-wired properties, and if so, what other aspects of a brush are hard-wired like this?

Thanks
