volumetric light effect

hi, all

i've been tearing my hair out trying to get some text to cast shadows in fog, to get that light streaming effect often used in movie titling - no joy so far, anyone got any tips they can pass on

cheers,
tony

Are you using Light Fog from a light?

..or are you trying to cast visible shadow-rays through regular volume environ fog?

Sorry, but I just need to know so I don't waste your time:)

NOTE: Just FYI, If you are using LIGHT fog (fog from a light)
Remember that Light Fog attributes are only available for Point, Spot and Volume lights:)

hi, rage
i've tried both ways without success (using spotlight) - i'm obviously missing some basic point here

don't realy mind which way i do it as long as can get something to work

cheers,
tony

With light fog I've found that the sclae of yur scene is very important. From all of my experiments I found that light fog looks awesome if the scale of your scene is very small, but no matter how hard you try you cannot make the fog light bigger. No one on this site could figure out how to mkae it bigger.

My fog light thread

Either keep yuour scene small or you cannot use fog lights.

lightfog... with time youll learn to hate it....

it seems to be a cyclic problem:banghead: , heres my thread

it might be worthy to unify lightfog problems/solutions and make it sticy?

thanks all for your help - i thinked i cracked my immediate problem by just scaling up the light then everything else seemed to fall into place - although i'm not 100% sure exactly how i got it to work, as i was trying lots of different things

if you guys wanna see the result, go here:
http://www.twobrowngirls.com/tc/las_...ype%20test.mov

it's an mpeg4 quicktime movie and plays on mac and pc

just one more thing - i bumped up the contrast in after effects as the original output was a bit flat - is there a way of acheiving this in maya - i've fiddled with various parameters but could not get what i wanted, especially to make the light streaks more obvious

cheers,
tony
