hypershade

use your hypershade to create a blinn or whatever material you want import your bump from the 2d file.mmb drag the bump onto the blinn in hypershade and select bump.dont keep it at its values you usually have to lower that because it to strong.to do that just right click on the blinn and select graph the network..and select the bump from there and lower the value.hope that helps.

make sure you have lights in your scene because it works by adjusting the normals of the geometry to give the illusion of "texture" on the object

auto

if its a poly or any other material after applyiny hit automatic mapping in the textures so it doesent stretch.looks alot better.

well if it's a simple object then automatic mapping will work. However with a more complex object you will need to uv map it properly to be able to paint the displacement where it's needed.
