Q:Avoiding excess geometry and bunching edges...

I was wondering how do I best address issues as shown in the attached image on future projects.
The image shows 2 areas I chose to simply collapse edges to a single point rather the extand geometry down the entire length of the model. Is this acceptable? Is there a convention or some rules on handling things like this? |
