Please help with UVs!

Ok, well I followed the free tutorial on texturing and I made the door (which came out pretty good for first time) but when I go to the UV texture editor and select the whole object, the UV set it completely gray. Now when I select some other models (which i downloaded from different sites) the UV mapping appears perfectly. Please, can anyone give me some detailed help on how to create a UV map? I'm using maya 6.0. Thanks alot in advance.
