Mogul Steam Locomotive

1 Attachment(s)
I decided it was time I made a model from scratch with no imput from tutorials ect.
I wanted to do a vehicle that was different from a car so ambitiously chose a steam Locomotive, I have to say that getting reference for this perticular loco was really difficult, but I have pieced it together using various photos and other references.
I still have lots to model but decided to give you guys a preview.
I am struggling to model the wheel linkages and pistons right now.
anyway here it is :

And before you ask here a wireframe ..lol

ransick 07-07-2004 07:40 PM

heeeeeeey dude!! this is going to be gooooood!! keep this thing up man! really nice job sofar... and oh ...could you perhaps post a wire ? :p

jsprogg 08-07-2004 01:20 AM

Thanks man ..gonna be a lot of detailing on this one ..looking forward to have a go at animating it too when it is all done and dusted :)

cracker 08-07-2004 02:14 PM

the proportions dont look quite right to me

what ref did you use?

MainlineX 08-07-2004 02:19 PM

Coming along very nicely!!! Looking forward to seeing it's progress! Good job!! :)

jsprogg 08-07-2004 04:56 PM

cracker ...it is modeled froma blue print and the proportions are correct, it might be the angle of the render tho.
I obviously have a lot more to add to it and maybe when the wheels are complete and the detailing is done on the boiler and the front end is added it will look more proportioned.
Thanks Mainline ...will try and post an update soon, but modeling the wheel linkages and piston gear is proving to be a challenge..lol

Heres a pic of the train . not quite the same but the right model.
This very simular to what mine should look like when done :)

NextDesign 08-07-2004 10:40 PM

Cool. I havn't seen a lot of train models on SM. Great job so far mate!

mtmckinley 08-07-2004 11:51 PM

Neat stuff. I think the long cylinder might be a bit too long, compared to your reference, but if you're going for, like, a suped-up version, it works.

jsprogg 09-07-2004 01:28 AM

Thanks Mike , I am not actually using the pic as a proportional reference but more of a contruction reference . I have a 2d blue print of the side and rear of the train to get the length and width but I have to use what images I could find of the same model of the train but not exact to the blueprint I have so I could figure out what the componnents were and how they relate to the 2d image.
It is proving to be a challenge with out a front or top view but it matches well to the two 2d images I have.
I worked on it a little more but not much to post yet so I will wait a little while before posting an update.
I do plan to animate it eventually so I am trying to model it as best I can with that in mind.

ransick 09-07-2004 06:19 AM

goood for you jsprogg!
It's nice to see someone really putting his best in his project! I know for sure that this will be as great as you have in mind :)
keep it rollin' dude

Hi , been working a little more on this and will post a render later today :)
For now here is a side render with the reference overlay for your viewing pleasure ....

Hi..I have added the front light and the bell, also added the boiler straps and been working for hours on the pistons and drive gear..still lots to be done on the wheels but hears an update :)

Hi jsprogg,

your train is looking great. Keep up the progress!!

jsprogg 14-07-2004 06:59 AM

Thanks guys :)
soreel did you model the train in your animation and most importantly how did you animate the wheel and piston motion ?
I do plan to animate this train eventually when finished but the thought of keeping piston and rods and wheels in sync is a bit scarey..lol

NextDesign 14-07-2004 09:43 PM

Looks great mate!

Thanks Peltra ...he's an update of the undercarriage.
still lots to do and it's getting complicated and crowded ..hehe.
this is a rendered wire.. and i did notice that not all the wire is visible on the render mostly because I didn't want to set the normals to hard at this time , but you can still get the idea.I will try and post a full train render as soon as I finish the undercarriage.
as always C & C welcome :)

Jay 16-07-2004 06:59 PM

Hey Jsprogg

Well done, thats a refreshing model to see!!

_J

soreel 16-07-2004 08:02 PM

Very nice!!! love the detail!! and yes I modeled the train. I used MEL expressions to animate the wheels - the idea is to be able to move the train and the wheels move on their own including the pistons.

will save you headaches when you get to the animation - you don't have to key frame every single frame - all you key is the train. everything else is linked as a child or a group.

Hi Guys ..as promised heres an update of my progress.
Take no notice of the textures or colours as they are just a guide for me to work by.
As always C& C welcome :)

ransick 20-07-2004 06:19 AM

looks all steamy to me!! ;)

MainlineX 20-07-2004 01:31 PM

Hey jsprogg!! Looking really good!!! It is definately coming along nicely!! Keep it up man!! :)

sjlocke 20-07-2004 03:33 PM

Hey,

Just for fun, here's a train engine I did that never got textured. I also had it setup to move the wheels automagically, but with driven keys, as I find you don't have to spend time trying to find out the right equation, and I had so many "joints".

Started doing some more work on my train :)

ransick 30-09-2004 09:37 AM

good for you! ;)

swankymonkey 01-10-2004 06:48 AM

Man, I missed seeing this one.

This is turning out beautifully!

Dave

jsprogg 01-10-2004 07:02 AM

thanks swankyMonkey, it's getting kinder difficult at the moment as I only have back and side view references.I am working on all the linkages and various parts under the train and the only breakdown I could find of how it all works and fits together is from a web site of a guy that built a quarter scale replica for real ..lol
So I have about 60 pics of the parts he made and I am trying to relate those parts to various photos and my image planes to fit it all together, it's little tedious but I am getting there slowly.

t3logy 02-10-2004 07:03 AM

Just found this thread! Good work.

Billy_Cat 05-10-2004 04:52 AM

Its looking great! how did you render it in wireframe?

jsprogg 05-10-2004 07:06 AM

Thanks t3 and Billy.
Those perticular renders were done with Maya's vector renderer, you have to harden all the normals to get the edges to show and if you look carefully not all of them are visable, with a little tweaking you could solve this but as a wip post I didn't really bother, it's a nice effect though.

joed8349 13-11-2005 03:19 AM

This is looking very nice. I saw the link from the one thread in the challenge. Nice job.

jsprogg 13-11-2005 11:19 AM

thanks Joed..I guess I should finish this sometime ...hehe

webbcreativearts 13-11-2005 04:38 PM

Hey man great work!!!

I have always been a fan of steam engines and this one is really comming along nicely

keep up the good work

I would love to see you do some post work on one of those images. To give it the 1800's, black and white, nostalgic look and feel.

soreel 20-07-2006 03:37 PM

hi jsprogg,

did you ever finish your train? how did it turn out?

Lt Jim 24-07-2006 08:00 PM

Yes, I just noticed this thread myself (and I'm a train nut)! Do let us know how it all came out!
