CGTalk Challenge Concepts
Well! I have to get moving on my Challenge work so I started to sketch some small assasin/attack droids that would wreak havok by disabling enemy installations and ships before concerted assaults. oooo sounds flash. Here is some small sketches and I splashed some colour on one quickly in Photoshop to see what it would look like. Hmmm not bad but I need to further work on my concept.

Looks good so far. Would like to see thoughs updates.
|
Pony! Yeah I know what you mean about the updates. I am on it now as I had the old pre-competition jitters and could not get a good concept and I have been also stuck doing a website for a mate.
Will be uploading some more solid sketches tonight! :) :) Waiting for your next update with anticipation! |

Damn! Have you ever started a project and it just does not want to come together? I'm really struggling with this one for some reason. I will keep posting updates and I just have to work through the problem.
I am not sure if I like the droids head to be honest. Here is another (clearer) sketch of the guy I did last night. I wanna get onto the modeling but I want to make sure that he is right before I start. |
I think "Ant" when i see him. Is the look you are going after?
Thought of "Atom Ant" on the first one, only modernized if i am making sense. t3 Good feel tho. 8 |
Atom Ant! Ha ha! Yeah I can see that t3logy. I was wanting a little guy that is fast and black.
I like this guy and will develop him a bit more perhaps in another project but I have changed tact once again. I felt that I needed something more sinister and classic. So here is the concept that I think I am going to run with. I sketched this guy really roughly and then bought the sketch into Illustrator. Worked it up and then smoothed it out in Photoshop. The character feels stronger so now I will spec him up in profile for a tracing template so I can model him in maya. Will keep you posted. Feedback is most welcome. http://www.winteractiv.com/opera/deathdroid2_5.jpg |
and here I was rooting for the "odds against aspect/humor in the sitation" of the challenge. Didn't mean to slay my "hero" with the ant comment.
The lethal pauma oozing malignant intent is awesome too. t3logy |
Hey t3logy
Thanks for your feedback and you are not responsible for atom ant's demise. Heh heh! That is a good name for the little fella. I will be hopefully uploading the image plane reference tonight - Yeah I know it is just another pict but I have to get it right before I start modeling. |
Looking cool, surfer. :)
|
Hey thanks Mike!
Well here is the possible image plane reference. Here pussy pussy! heh heh! I have not decided if I like the "bat" ears or not. Any comments would be welcome. Now I have to work out how to make this sucker... Back to the T-rex Dvd by Kurt. If you don't have it, get it!!! (SPAM) haha! http://www.winteractiv.com/opera/deathdroid3.gif |
one question
How is this going fit in with the Grand Space Opera theme?
good luck you got quite a bit of work to do there |
Ahhh Grasshopper
All will be revealed... My philosophy is that everyone has seen the big spaceship and the grand space scene before so I am going to take a risk to try and be a little different. If it fails miserably, I still have a cool cat droidy thingy heh heh! You are right tho! Lots of work! |
ok, here is the latest progress with the head basically modeled. I am still working on it improving detail and proportions but I thought I would post this for some feedback. Cool!

Some really nice concepts, good start on your model aswell.
Keep at it :) |
Thanks Rubber Chicken
I'm working on the head a bit more. I'm thinking that it is almost there unless anyone has some suggestions... I will be working on the ear next. I have also included a shot of the wire if anyone is interested. excuse the seam in the middle. I'm to tired to merge the sucker. http://www.winteractiv.com/opera/testhead2.jpg |
I like the eye, in this case the eye sockets.
Dae:) |
Hmm Due to a suggestion from a friend I have decided to try snarl wrinkles. I am not sure which one I like better to be honest. I also did a little test render to get an idea of how the geezah might look in mean black.
Suggestions/opinions? http://www.winteractiv.com/opera/testhead3.jpg |
cant wait to see this come together, like the chrome one better.
Dae:tup: |
The sinister sleekness of the black is appealing. The chrome is good, but not as striking, imho.
t3logy love your friend's idea - snarl is awesome ! |
Hey thanks for the feed back and I have been busy so I have not been able to spend as much time on this as I have wanted too. Should be updating every few days now.
Ok here are the ears modeled. Once again, excuse the seams bec I will be joining the model together at the end once I have mapped the uvs. Cool http://www.winteractiv.com/opera/testhead4.jpg |
ooooohhhh
I like it, maybe try some sort of nose cavity in a similar shape as the ear, I think it would fit in well:)
Dae:) |
Surfer,
Do you own a dog? I own a bull mastiff, and have seen him snarl, growl, etc. zillions of times. You know how their skin curls and "whoofs/poofs" up around the teeth - it isn't even, it is symentrical, but not even. I'm not professing to be an expert, however, I do specialize in animals in my 2d work, and do alot of felines. Snarl's a specialty - unless you are going for total metalic / robotic look, uplift around the canines with a bit of scrunching between the eyes would make it look a bit more vicious. As she is right now, the snarl is there, but not the anger/emotion ? Don't know if the explanation makes sense, it's just mho. T3logy |
awesome, absolutely awesome
|
Hey guys! thanks for the awesome feedback and all comments are duly noted!
Dae Yeah I think it needs a nose cavity as well. I will work on that... t3logy No I dont have any pets (to my dismay) but I think I know what you are getting at regarding the snarl. It does need more intensity, Droid - Robot or whatever. I am starting to get a bit bogged down so I have moved on past the head and I will come back to revisit it once I have the basics of the body all sorted out. The latest development... http://www.winteractiv.com/opera/testbody1.jpg I think that quite a bit of the detail needs refining but I will create the rest of the body before I go back. Ta! |
very nice
oohhh... aahhhh, looking good Surfermcd:)
Dae:) |
Ha ha! You're Nuts Dae! How is your work going??
I have not had much time to work on this properly over the last few days and I am rushing to get all of the proportions etc right before I go back and tidy bung geometry and details. I finished the base of the front leg tonight minus the foot (more detail to come on it - refer concept sketch). I was then so excited that I copied it and messed around with it to see how it would look on the back. So excuse the back leg because that is a fakey. I will post the real one soon. http://www.winteractiv.com/opera/testbody2.jpg Yawn! Bedtime! |
hahah mate i love it !
|
Very, very cool! Cant wait to see it finished!
|
me nuts (the fruit), sometimes,
mine is going ok, should have some updates soon keep up the good work. Dae:) |
wow, that chrome one looks awesome! Great job man. lookin forward to next render!
|
Hey Surfer
Real cool, nice job _J |
Incredible . . .
t3logy |
Hey Surfermcd, Looking really good so far, wow, nice one..:) :)
|
hello! Me again...
Everyone must be getting sick of this thread ha ha! The pain thing is that I can only put in an hour or two a night so it is moving a little slowly for my liking. EVERYBODY!!! CHECK DAE'S COOL MODEL HERE http://forum.simplymaya.com/showthre...5&pagenumber=3 Hey JANGO thanks for popping in (honoured) t3logy good to see you and ta for your support where I am at the moment: I have remodeled the back leg closer to the original concept. There is a little more detail required in the formation of muscles but I am leaving that for now. I have also re done the torso with less detail. I will rework that later too. I did not like the excessive detail in there bec it seemed to distract from the rest of the model. Finally I have done a render with the original concept and the image plane so you can get the idea. Also included a small wire. If you read all of the above good on ya! http://www.winteractiv.com/opera/testbody3.jpg |
Hey Surfer
Do you have a website? As I'm sticking links on my site still, must do Mikes actually too ( if hes watching: Is that okay Mike?) Your model is slick dude, it has a Manga kind of style to it in some ways. _J PS, is that The Mighty Slater on your avatar, or Rob Machado or none of the above?? |
That kitty is turning out really well Surfer, thanks for that link to my thread but I haven't done much, just followed the ninja tut, but thanks anyway:).
Dae:) |
Hey Jango!
I would love to have a link on your site to mine (www.winteractiv.com) Cool! I will link to your too once I update mine. Ummm, (Blush!) that is actually me on the avatar at a lovely beach in New Zealand called hot water beach. It has good waves and the most amazing scenery and there is a natural hot spring that you dig thru the sand at low tide and sit in sandy spa pools! Freaky Here is a pic http://home.arcor.de/wsb/nz/coro3.jpg or if you wanna see a bigger pic with the people sitting in the sand.... check this website y23stockpic.free.fr/ 2003coromandel/ This has absolutely nothing to do with my WIP HA HA! |
|
That render looks brilliant! Gr8 work.
|
hey surfer,
gr8, mate, looking very sweet, i kinda reminds me of Alien, (is there a bit of influence in there?) later matey look forward to the rest :) murph |
