Star Wars: Republic Cruiser

Hi

I'm modelling this Republic Cruiser for a Star Wars fan film I'm doing some sfx for

It isn't going to be an exact copy of the one used in the film, the director wants it to be slightly altered so it looks a bit modified
Plus as it only appeared in the film for a very short time there aren't that many reference picture of it

Nice one Jimbo! And welcome aboard!

Roman 13-10-2002 09:10 PM

Welcome to SM Tolerate.. :p
i like the level of detail this has..

undseth 14-10-2002 01:33 PM

Mmmmmm... :)

Oculus 14-10-2002 04:12 PM

Talk about detail! This is looking great. I cant wait to see it fully textured. How did you know to put all that stuff there? Did you make it all up?

Tolerate 14-10-2002 05:57 PM

I was given this link

Republic Cruiser

I made a lot of the little detail up to fit around the general geometry I've seen in these images on that site coz some of the pictures seem quite fuzzy

Roman 14-10-2002 08:27 PM

nice link man.. damn, i'm startin' to think of makin' one of my own too..
yea, the pics where kinda fuzzy.. nice work you've done so far.. how about an update... :p

bJekX 14-10-2002 08:59 PM

very nice looking model ur doing there, im sure all that bevel makes your scene really heavy doesnt it ? :) but thats life...
send us some progress pics
ho and welcome to sm man

Tolerate 14-10-2002 09:09 PM

It does make it pretty heavy yeah, but then I am looking at making this ones of the most detailed versions of this ship this side of ILM :)

bJekX 14-10-2002 10:05 PM

that would be nice wouldnt it ? :D

Tolerate 14-10-2002 10:33 PM

As you asked so nicely for an update, here you go

It's not much of an update but I have the day off work tomorrow so I plan to do quite a bit more

http://www.btinternet.com/~scorpy/Re...ser_wip_13.jpg

Just incase you were wondering, that is mayas default renderer too :)

Markuz 15-10-2002 01:34 PM

Wow, so much detail! Do you model after a blueprint, or are you such a star wars freak, that you know inside out where every nut is placed?:D

Regards

Markuz

Tolerate 15-10-2002 01:37 PM

ermm, pretty much a star wars freak

i listen to the soundtracks when i model, it helps me concentrate

Markuz 15-10-2002 01:44 PM

Well, when I would listen to these great soundtracks while modeling, I would have to concentrate on the superb music;).

Tolerate 15-10-2002 03:39 PM

Done some more today, started on the mid section

http://www.btinternet.com/~scorpy/Re...ser_wip_14.jpg

Now that I have done some more, I'm off to the pub :D

adldesigner 15-10-2002 03:44 PM

Gotta love the amount of detail!
Great Job! keep on it!

how heavy is it?

undseth 15-10-2002 03:56 PM

I wonder, is this a 100% poly-model Tolerate?

Tolerate 15-10-2002 06:42 PM

it's about 95% poly, i decided to make it poly coz it has the best texturing tools

Roman 16-10-2002 12:06 AM

nice details man.. :p

TychoCelchuuu 18-10-2002 02:33 PM

Wowee, you are really good. Looks alot like the "real" (I wish) thing. Keep going!

Tolerate 18-10-2002 05:43 PM

I think one of the most tricky things for this model will be the animatable landing gear

mumbojumbo_13 19-10-2002 03:05 AM

nice man
how long u been @ maya ?
:D congrtas

Tolerate 19-10-2002 06:37 AM

been using it for about 3 years, since version 2.5

ragecgi 19-10-2002 07:30 AM

Looks GREAT man!

Can't wait to see it shaded, lit and rendered:)

Whoohoo!

Darkon 20-10-2002 01:10 AM

Using RAT? Looks good! Really looking forward to seeing this progress :)

Darkon

Tolerate 20-10-2002 08:59 AM

Nah, all those images are from Maya native renderer, but I am experimenting with MR at the moment

I would love to use RAT but I can't program the shaders and RAT5 doesn't work with Maya 4.5 :(

Tolerate 20-10-2002 09:10 AM

Here is a final gathering render of it using MR 1.5 beta

David 20-10-2002 12:28 PM

Looking very nice m8

David :)

undseth 20-10-2002 02:01 PM

This picture is now copied to my HDD :)

adldesigner 20-10-2002 02:32 PM

Great Render! :D

I have a question though, when you render Final Gathering, does your object lose its shaders? or can you use Final Gathering with a textured object?

Roman 20-10-2002 02:46 PM

lookin' really nice man.. :p

Tolerate 20-10-2002 07:10 PM

your render will still keep the textures when you render with final gathering, I just haven't done any textures for it yet

dave_baer 21-10-2002 06:30 PM

Not a lot of detail but maybe this pic will help...

RADIANT VII - REPUBLIC CRUISER

Posted this link on undseths post as well, but in case you dont see it, here it is for you. Maybe it will help.
GILSO SCHEMATICS

Tolerate 21-10-2002 07:56 PM

thanks a lot

i'll use them a bit, but i'm not a big fan of star wars schematics as there aren't any made of the ships made in the movies

there are the oficial ones but they are different from the ones used in the movies, at least thats what i noticed

macace 24-10-2002 01:22 PM

Hhhey... nice...

one question

those test renders.. how did U do them?
did U use fakeGI plugins or ambient lights? or some other way maybe?

have tryed to do renders like those... but NO! :D

Tolerate 25-10-2002 06:51 AM

The first ones were done with the default renderer, 1 ambient light and 1 ray-traced diectional light

this one and the last ones were done with mental ray using final gathering

the main difference between the last 2 is the asdded detail on the midsection and the top part the joins the mid section to the rear section has had some bits added

http://www.btinternet.com/~scorpy/Re...ser_wip_16.jpg

i'll do a close up of the mid section while i'm at work and post it when i get home

man i wish i could retire and i'm only 21

Tolerate 25-10-2002 07:46 PM

here is that other render i promised

http://www.btinternet.com/~scorpy/Re...ser_wip_17.jpg

i know that it is a bit difficult to see all the detail, but that it because of the final gathering quality

Kevin 25-10-2002 08:13 PM

very nicely detailed! you have put in a lot of effort and it shows!

nice WIP
