merging vertices = no good.

this is a problem I´m facing over and over again. maybe someone can give me an advice how to handle this.

very often, after combining 2 parts of geometry and merging the verts poly to subD I get this -> result: 0

the SE tells me to clean up the geometry cause of nonmanifold vertices. I do so and have loose faces arround the bad verts. but to connect geometry I would have to merge the vertices again.

what I don´t understand is: after some attempts of merging/cleaning up/deleting history/deleting faces/add to polygonTool it is working for some verts - not for all. I never understood what the real problem was, how to describe it exactly and how to avoid it. it would make me very happy if someone can tell about.

it was the only thing I didn´t look at - the normals. problem solved.

I was about to post but you solved it. Yep, make sure your normals are all the right way before merging verts

the mesh is still not like I want it to be and causing me some trouble. but this one looks better I think then the other head´s geometry did.

Jango, you rock dude!

it was all about the eyes I think. never manipulated the mesh like this before. my biggest handycap was to connect/integrate the eyePart to the rest of the head. modeling is very handy now. let´s see how far I get with this new head.

thx man!

Looks like a good start on the haed:)

The body looks really nice, good job!

the part around nose and mouth looks chaotic but still is a clean quad mesh. I guess there has to be a better solution cause topology still looks bumpy and tweaking is awfull by now.

Your edgeloops look good to me:)

Keep it going!

If this is your first real attempt at a head dont worry. It all looks good. The loops and clean mesh will come but it takes time and practice. So persevere and be patient with it.

actually this is my second head, and from the 2nd the 4th version. I was so impatient cause I felt that every attempt of mine was doomed to fail. why? cause I just didn´t know how to make a good start with the geometry - like a chess game. it´s all about the first 2-3 moves. thanks to you I´ll be patient now and do a lot of practice.

working on the arms. chest and shoulder area still need some definition, also the jaw looks not too cool.
