Sept/Oct Challenge Rules and Guidelines!

Sept/Oct Challenge!

Video Game Character!

For this challenge, choose a video game character from the early days of games (SNES, NES, Genesis, etc...) and redesign a modern version of them! It doesn't matter if your chosen character has been in a 3D game before!

1) Try to show a screenshot from the game you have chosen! Show concepts! Show progress! This proves that you have worked on the challenge during the challenge timeframe! Modeling AND texturing is required.

2) Your entry DOES NOT have to be a low-poly model, however, if you'd like to, your polycount could be, for example, approx. 3000 triangle polys, with your textures allowed to be up to 2 512x512s.

3) Label your thread thusly:

Sept/Oct - Norm or Noob - Your name

Choose to classify yourself as a Normal or Noobie class entry. Whichever class you choose is the class your final submitted entry will compete against! A winner will be chosen from both classes.

4) Mods and Admins can enter, but are inelligible to win. If a mod chooses to participate, choose "Mod" class rather than Norm or Noob.

5) Applicable 3D programs are: Lightwave, Maya, 3DS Max, and Zbrush (zbrush is allowed for the creation of displacement/normal maps and the like). Until we get a unified challenge forum, please post in the applicable Simply site.

6) All work must be done by the participant. All work must be done within the confines of the challenge dates and not before.

7) Try not to attach images to the forum that are larger than 640x480. Feel free to host larger images yourself.

8) Only one (1) entry per applicant. You can work on as many as you'd like but keep it all in one thread. Choose the one you want to enter as your final.

9) Final entries must be posted into a Final Entry thread that a mod will create in the last couple weeks of the challenge.

The due date of the challenge is approx. 7am Nov. 1st, USA Central time. Get it in before to make sure!

alienscience 04-09-2005 10:14 PM

So, they have to be from orignal sprites? Things that were never 3 dimensionilized(?)?

mtmckinley 04-09-2005 11:12 PM

right, old games that have never been "modern-ized".

Or, if they *have* been modernized, the modern version is different enough from the original so that your entry isn't too close to the modern version.

alienscience 04-09-2005 11:41 PM

Ok, htx for the help. I guess Ill have to go back in time to dig something up.

THX1138 05-09-2005 12:03 PM

Your entry DOES NOT have to be a video game model

So one can make their own custom game model apart from the G1 game characters, or am I not understanding that statement ?

however, if you'd like to, your polycount would be approx. 3000 triangle polys

Is that the max poly count for any model submitted here for this challenge, or is that for any "custom" game model?

mtmckinley 05-09-2005 12:41 PM

your entry can be as high-resolution as you want it to be. If you wanted to make a game model, though, I'd ask that you stick to the given tri count and textures.

I edited the rule, hopefully for clarity.

THX1138 05-09-2005 01:00 PM

Thanks for clearing that up.

alienscience 05-09-2005 01:19 PM

Cool, but now I have a question. Its not about your rules, just normal stupidity I guess. Can anyone recall a elevtor action 3d remake. I cant, but didnt want to start a useless thread.

dae 05-09-2005 01:27 PM

dont think so, just the original and then the sequel.

t1ck135 05-09-2005 02:16 PM

Just gone through a fair few games I used to play on the Commodore64 and some were remade and then cancelled.

Might the rules be modified to disallow using such games as you can quite easily find 3D screenshots of them and that might be advantageous to people.
Just a thought before people dive in and then get confused as to whether they can do that game or not :D

mtmckinley 05-09-2005 02:53 PM

Pretty much, if you can find it in 3D, probably don't do it.

Also, don't forget, this challenge is to take an old game icon and put your own spin on it. Not to copy the look of the old icon directly.

twisteddragon33 05-09-2005 04:59 PM

i was trying to think of a game to do... and i was wondering if i adopted a new adaptation of a space invaders scene would that be allowed?

mtmckinley 05-09-2005 09:12 PM

Sounds cool to me. I dont know of any specific modern space invaders game.

chathura 05-09-2005 10:07 PM

Atomic Robo Kid

Just wanted to make sure... I chose the atomic robo kid as my character and even though its 2d game i found some pics with 3d depth to him. Do you think its a wise choice?

t1ck135 06-09-2005 12:23 PM

I'd say as long as there isn't an actual game with the 3D character then thats ok. Lots of artwork will have been produced in the early days to give the characters the 3D feel without the game doing the same.

Oh btw, if anyone has missed it, last months challenge results are up in Lounges -> Announcements or here for the lazy ones ;)

mtmckinley 06-09-2005 08:59 PM

Are you guys finding the "not made in 3D before" rule too constricting? Because you are putting your own spin on it anyway, so I might be able to forgo that part of the rules as long as your entry isn't too similar to the existing 3D models.

Stormgetto 07-09-2005 04:55 AM

I`m not sure

Golden Axe for genesis had already been made in 3d?

Stormgetto 07-09-2005 05:13 AM

or maybee

I`d though maybe golden axe it is not the best character to rebuild.
Any Connan looks character could be a remake of golden axe male character right.
So let me change the question.
Had any 3d version of Strider for mega drive?

t1ck135 07-09-2005 11:11 AM

I had a quick look at strider when I was choosing.
The last strider game had characters in 2D but the background was 3D. They classed it as 2.5D because they didnt know exactly where to put it. :)

Personally I'd say that its ok to do strider as the characters themselves were only 2D.

Better wait for a mod response.

mtmckinley 07-09-2005 01:51 PM

yes, that's fine.

G-Man 08-09-2005 05:03 AM

I'd be alot more likely to enter this challenge ( if i can find time around work ).. if you forgo'd the part about a game character that hasnt bee modernized....All the cool old Games i can tink of, have been modernized already...Knightrider.. Metal Gear....Metroid..ect ect

I found this one.
I belive no 3d rebuild title was made for this one.
If someone it is interest I think could be nice to remake.
I just couldn`t find reference enough just this cover image.
And from what I remember this game was so dificult that I never could finish it.

Legolas_hv 08-09-2005 10:01 AM

i know a couple of games that havent been brought to 3d but there's a lot of art about them...
(like for example guilty gear x)
can i choose one of those games characters?

mtmckinley 08-09-2005 02:54 PM

Ok, consider the "not in 3D" rule null and void then. Sorry for the inconvience. But please ensure that you are putting your own spin on it! If it's too similar to existing designs, it won't be a winner!

If you like Metroid, try Thexder... it was never 3D.

-=master_mind=- 10-09-2005 03:38 PM

Would it be ok if I create a model of a ragnarok online caracter?
It's not an old game, but all the caracters are 2d sprites and never were created in 3d.

That's in game screen shot of the character I want to make.

mtmckinley 10-09-2005 06:00 PM

the "never in 3D" thing is no longer a rule.

EVERYONE:

Don't forget, the goal is not to RECREATE something... it's to put your own spin on it!

the_podman 10-09-2005 08:44 PM

Man, I love this type of comp. Hopefully I can finish what I'm doing soon and enter! I can think of TONS of games I'd put my own spin on. I'm an old guy so gaming goes all the way back to pong on the Odysee from Magnovox for me :)

airjordan12345 11-09-2005 02:17 AM

So lets say i wanted to model link from zelda. I know he has been modernized but what if i make link from say a game boy game or the NES/SNES era?

IF not ill think of something else just checking hes my favorite character ever.

EDIT - My bad forgot to read the "Never in 3D" reply. Thanks ill get working on Link ASAP :D.

THX1138 11-09-2005 05:52 AM

the "never in 3D" thing is no longer a rule.

LOL, If only I could have waited a bit longer to decide on what I really wanted to do. I'm sticking with what I'm woring on now.

airjordan12345 11-09-2005 07:41 PM

Ok so does it have to be around 3000 tris or is that what we should aim for?

Im asking because im modeling Samus aran from the Metroid series and...well...shes pretty detailed so i want to know if i can make her as detailed as i need her to be or if i have to work around the 3000 tris.

Another thing, the 2 texture files includes bump and displacement maps? just wondering to check if i will be able to make bumps or if i have to ave those for textures only.

Thanks
Airjordan

dae 11-09-2005 07:57 PM

the 3000 limit only applies if you want to make it an actual game model,
I assume the two maps are 1 for the body and 1 for the head, best let mtmckinley answer taht one.

dae

airjordan12345 11-09-2005 08:02 PM

Ohh cool cause i already have 800 tris just on the gun =P. Since i dont intend to make this an actual in game model ill make her as detailed as I need for things to be cool.

As for the Bump and texture maps having to be 2 total ill wait for an official answer though that shouldnt be a problem, it would just make some things easier.

Thanks though :D

mtmckinley 11-09-2005 09:43 PM

there are no limits. the 3000 tri thing is only there as a guideline for those wanting to do low poly game models.

airjordan12345 11-09-2005 10:05 PM

Cool. So anything goes for the textures as well?

Just checking as most of the stuff im working on could easily be achieve with a bump map and it could save me TRIs and time.

Thanks

mtmckinley 12-09-2005 12:00 AM

the texture limit within the same rule is also regarding making a low poly game model, yes.

Really nice theme contest.

I would like to model the Ghost'n Goblin hero....but i have seen on line (sigh sigh...) that a 3d version of this game had been released for PS2 with the title of "Maximo: ghost to glory"...... in 2001....:-(

so...some of my favourite games in which there was and hero or a character were Shinobi, Sunset Riders, Toki, Willow, Spaltter House 1, and Wonder Boy......

...and i have chosen....... Splatter House!!!!!!! of which i never listened any 3D future versions for any consolle o pc.

good modelling time and gaming to all!!!!!

the_podman 15-09-2005 12:47 PM

DUDE!! Splatterhouse! I am so jealous. Great Choice! I loved that game. Maximo 1 and 2 are among my all time favorite PS2 games, btw.

mtmckinley 15-09-2005 03:02 PM

make sure everyone reads the rules, thoroughly. The "no longer in 3D" rule is no longer in effect.
