Nov/Dec - Norm - dilberts

I've been posting in the work in progress forum for a few months now, and never even saw this challenge deal. Well I decided to enter with my Yamaha Roadstar that I've been posting in the WIP forum. As you can see from the WIP forum, I started this model on the 13th of November, so I think I still qualify for entry. I'm not even sure if I'll be able to get it finished in time, but I'll give it a go. The engine's going to be the hard part.

Here's where I'm at so far. All NURBS so far.

One last thing. I know I screwed up the thread title. I tried to edit the post to change the title, but for some reason it doesn't want to update. Anyone know why?

Neil,

I can't wait to see renders of this! Looks GOOD

Cheers
Paul

are you a pro dilberts? You are awesome, do you convert to subds as you go? How did you get all the tiny holes in the wheel? Booleans?
Where have you learnt from, What has been your path to this amazing work?

joed8349 17-11-2005 06:12 PM

The motorcycle is looking nice.

I think you need to PM a Moderator in order for them to change the title of your thread. I don't know if it matters much though.

gster123 17-11-2005 06:13 PM

Looking forward to this!!

Clopper, so far it's all NURBS, so all the holes or rounded edges you see are either trimmed surfaces or fillets. Here's another pic that demonstrates the use of NURBS a little better.

An example is the hexagonal bolts which are really easy with NURBS. Just make a NURBS circle with 12 spans, then select every other CV around the surface and rotate them until you have a hexagonal shape with nice rounded corners. Then duplicate it, move the duplicate, and loft between the two. Finally, create a NURBS plane and intersect it with the lofted surface (this will be the bolt top), and then do a circular fillet between the lofted surface and the plane (make sure "create curve on surface" is checked so you can trim off the unneeded edges). Voila you have a nice looking nut, with rounded edges, all in about 30 seconds.

I'm no pro, just a hobbyist for now.

nice detail, if you can get it finished then this will look very realistic (texturing permitting), keep it up :)

Latest render. I had to model a second hand grip as the left one is different to the right in real life :angery: I confess, I did consider just mirror copying, but this one is going to be as accurate as possible.

magicsy 19-11-2005 08:34 AM

really great modeling hope i can be this good some day.
good luck in the comp!

Here's where I'm at with the engine. This engine is turning out to be the hardest modeling I've ever tried. The heatsink was a nightmare to model, and there's still a ton of nuts and sticky out bits to model.

I've got the same thread going in the WIP forum. The reason is, I only noticed the challenge forum this week, so there's probably others out there like me. Hope the admin guys don't mind.

papalatistudios 21-11-2005 03:37 AM

Nice Progress

t1ck135 21-11-2005 09:13 AM

looking forward to seeing the engine develop as it looks pretty detailed :)

got any closeups of the engine so we can see what you'll be adding?

A few more renders. I added a few more details to the engine, and set up the render environment. Unfortunately I can't render the whole bike with an IBL set up as my system can't handle it, so I just did it with the engine close up. I'm not even half done and the scene is already too big :headbang:

THX1138 22-11-2005 07:17 AM

Wires are always welcome. :)

gster123 22-11-2005 05:14 PM

Sorry for my Ignorance, but whats a IBL set up?

Looks good man keep it up

dilberts 22-11-2005 06:52 PM

gster123. It stands for Image Based Lighting, and means the use of a High Dynamic Range Image to light the scene rather than physical lights. I just posted an explanation of the setup in the WIP forum if you want to take a look. In my opinion this is the way to get the most realistic renders. Unfortunately, it absolutely kills your RAM, and if the scene gets real big (like this bike), unless you have a supercomputer your system will often crash when it runs out of RAM during the render.

blomkaal 22-11-2005 07:51 PM

Looking at this makes me wanna quit now! :)

Still all nurbs?

Minstrel 23-11-2005 12:43 AM

This is some gorgeous work!!

THX1138 23-11-2005 01:13 AM

I tried rendering solely with IBL a while back and yep, it takes gobs of RAM. The model wasn't even that big. Now I just use the IBL sphere for ambient lighting.

Very nice job on the roadster, I would like to see a wire, unless that secret stuff that you don't want out. ;)

dilberts 23-11-2005 05:03 AM

blomkaal, yes it's still all NURBs. Converting now would be a nightmare.

THX1138. I'm sorry, I will post a wire next time I render. The thing is I don't get a chance to work on it that much because of my job, so usually it's midnight (U.S.A mountain time) before I get a chance. So if I don't respond quickly, it's not because I'm ignoring the request.

THX1138 23-11-2005 05:50 AM

Thats cool, I understand the job situation. My Job has be busy atleast 4 days out of the week.

Cheers for that, i've never heard it refered to as a IBL render before, just started to play around with them, I'll have a look at the set up in your other post

W O W  Dilberts you are working as though there were no tommorow!!!!! Not to mention the amount of details in this model!

Last update for today. It's thanksgiving here, so I had some time to work on it. Starting to work on the details now. Once the engine is complete, it's downhill from there, so hopefully I'll make the deadline.

magicsy 25-11-2005 08:02 AM

looks fantastic!! you definitely have that render setup down to a tee!
Great work.

cris007 25-11-2005 09:18 AM

I'm speechless... I am without speech :)

THX1138 25-11-2005 10:51 AM

Very nice wire on your roadster engine. Thanks for posting it!:)

Took a break from modeling for a few minutes to mess with some shaders. This was a render of a quick paint and chrome test. It's just a rush job so that I could test how my system is going to handle reflections. Suffice to say there's going to be no final gather on this project, my system crashes every time I try to render the whole bike. However, I think once I mess around with the lights and reflection source, I'll be able to squeeze out a nice final render with a regular mental ray render with simple lights.

vladimirjp 26-11-2005 04:08 PM

i dont think its fair to other entries for u to enter with a project u already started on, when everyone start from scratch.
that gives u more time advantage, and u have a start ahead already, its th 1st rule in the challenge i think.

altho i dont think it matters much cuz i doubt u will finish in time with this model.

dilberts 26-11-2005 05:06 PM

vladimirjp, I started this model on the 13th of November, and posted my first render of the wheel and brake disc on that day (look in the WIP forum), which is well within the time conditions. You can see by my updates every day that it is a current project that I am working on for this competition, and like you say, may not finish in time, so don't freak out.

These competitions are to encourage people to do good work and help each other out with questions. Let's not turn it into an argument. ;) I'd love to see your entry if you have time to post it.

magicsy 26-11-2005 05:52 PM

well said Bro,

mayafreak3 26-11-2005 08:36 PM

Really nice NURBS modeleing dilberts. It is a complex model. Textures will take some time, but at the rate you are progressing you should be fine I think.

Keep up the good work!
