Maya 2008

Well another update, doent really say much about it though...

http://pressreleases.autodesk.com/in...295%3C%2Ftd%3E

gster123 01-08-2007 02:59 PM

Also theres a press release saying that Autodesk are taking over the makers of mudbox, be cool to see that as a plug in or std for unlimited, doubt it though.

The Architect 01-08-2007 03:29 PM

Looks like they are changing the format of Maya version numbers into the Microsoft style progam, year style. Yet another attempt by Autodesk to corrupt our beloved 3d app.

And they are adding direct 3d features which I think is diminishes Maya's former dedication to abosulte quality.

01-08-2007 03:49 PM

Looks really cool, but why only a 32-bit version for Mac (PPC)? Didn’t 8.5 support 64-bit?

The Architect 01-08-2007 03:56 PM

Jr.Who > 'Looks really cool, but why only a 32-bit version for Mac (PPC)? Didn’t 8.5 support 64-bit?'

I'm guessing that the G5 is now obsolete so they don't bother releasing a dedicated version for it.

01-08-2007 03:58 PM

But the only PPC that runs Maya is the G5. Most G5s were 64-bit.

They've done the same with all there applications, I really doubt that simple version name change is corruping it, thats being frankly daft.

Think i'm going to reserve judgement on it as the press release says very little, I wanted to see Nucleus over dynamics, maybe some decent poly painting above and beyond what maya's already got, maybe pro boolians, more modeling tools, faster playback.

Really? I thought Maya supported Macs since 3.5, which if Wikipedia is right, came out in October 2001, which is about an entire year before IBM announced the 970. Could I be wrong on this?

I’m talking about the latest version. ;)

t1ck135 01-08-2007 05:21 PM

sounds quite interesting and can only really be good if they are adding in new features etc. I wonder if the interface will be changing a bit more this version?

gster123 09-08-2007 03:17 AM

Just looked on Autodesks site about whats changing in Maya 2008, the Mental Ray Core seems to be a great enhancement, IPR, all particles supported (even hardware ones). Also the skinning improvements looks goodm, as well asthe imporvements to the modeling set (which seems more of a glitch fix with regards to bevels and boolians, hey maybe there will be no more "Ive used a boolian and my objects Dissappeared" therads????)

Also the PLE is available to download

Yup thats what you get for reading to fast, and jumping to the whats new section!

09-08-2007 09:30 AM

Well, now I’m confused. Why would they have the PLE if the real thing hasn’t come out yet?

gster123 09-08-2007 10:15 AM

I meant I read it too fast

15-08-2007 12:20 PM

I just saw the demonstration videos, and read up some more on it, and it looks really great. What I really liked was the presets, and the new compass looks much better. I wonder what the “Bonus Tools” thing is……

Hopefully DT or Lynda will make some “What’s new in Maya 2008” videos.

gster123 15-08-2007 02:58 PM

Hopefully I should get the download when it comes out (as the uni I work for has the platinum membership) be looking forward to it although I dont really use a lot of the new tools in 8.5.

The bonus tools are really good, lots of nice little shortcuts, presets (especially for ncloth) etc etc have you got them for 8.5??

Jay 17-08-2007 04:39 PM

Hey Guys

This new version looks great, having recently tried out 8.5 with all the funky features I'll be looking to upgrade to Maya 2008 once its out. I did like the new cloth features (in 8.5) and its its so much slicker than previous versions where cloth and hair calcs were just so slow, and for small production teams thats not good at all.

The new rigging features look a joy to use and Im sure will stop alot of headaches even for the intermediate user.

I definately dont see this as a 'corruption' of our favourite software, its more like 'progression' and this time round it's been done very well. I think expectation is always too high when new companies move in, as we as people are so demanding in every aspect - they need to find their feet just like any normal person when starting a new job.

Any nuff said, moving on...
Jay

Did Maya 2008 come out yet?

NitroLiq 11-09-2007 06:34 PM

Yes.

tweetytunes 11-09-2007 11:27 PM

yer got the email with the download link the other day but autodesk messed it up and had it pointing to 8.5 - sorted now and just downloaded it - will trying this bad boy out 2mo.

jsprogg 12-09-2007 05:52 AM

I have to say having tried 2008 out , it is just awesome.
The little improvements made such as being able to have the components of a mesh in xray when you model are really helpful as is the toggle smooth function.
I have spent most of my time going through whats new so I can't tell if there are any bugs yet but I have to say I really like this version and it could well be the best version so far.

tweetytunes 12-09-2007 07:18 AM

Its soooo much faster - seems like they sorted out alot of memory problems.

ncloth news tricks are quite cool aswell

and hoo haar they got rid of that retarded looking dragon thing from the loading screen - that image was no way to try and sell maya.

Apart from that don`t really see that much of a change
