Jr.Who - W.I.P. - Pirate Ship

Hey guys,

I've been working on this one for a couple of days and I really enjoy it! The Spitfire seemed like a pain compared to this one.

After I finish this tut I'm going to try modeling something around the house (as Steve recommended), but there's still 2 tuts that I'm really interested in. I wanted to do some training for more intermediate modeling, so I'm thinking of doing the Ferrari and Apache.

Like usual, I’m just going to put up screen shots, but when I get to texturing, I’ll be doing some renders.

I think I might be working on the spots where they go today.

A project not textured? That's hardly a finished project!

Mayaniac 22-01-2008 03:17 AM

Sorry, what I meant to say (i type too fast) is:

Your going to have *Fun* texturing this one ;)

arran 22-01-2008 03:20 AM

Ah, yeah I'm hoping that the UV mapping won't be as much of a pain too.

Thanks! Rigging? Got any good links on how to rig something like this?

jsprogg 22-01-2008 03:43 AM

he is talking about ships rope rigging as apposed to skeleton rigging ...hehe

Oh, I forgot to post yesterday's work! I was having some problems with my modem, so my internet was wacking out.

AikoWorld 22-01-2008 06:41 PM

this looks like a very interesting project, looking forward to updates, nice job so far.

Mayaniac 22-01-2008 06:51 PM

This is looking good thus far.

No crits at the Mo!

Nice work!

Thanks a lot guys!

I got busy yesterday and today, but my actual Maya work today was lots of tweaking little things. I still have a couple more things to tweak and I need to make the cannons before moving onto the next part of the tut.

Here's the progress so far:

Mayaniac 24-01-2008 05:45 AM

Looking great so far!

Still no crits...... Your killing me here ;)

Looking forward to seeing this thing Textured!

Nice work thus far!

Thanks Mayaniac.

I'm hoping that this won't be obnoxious to UV map, as I'm terrible at UV mapping.

AikoWorld 24-01-2008 02:07 PM

starting to get some cool details, keep it up.

Thanks, Aiko.

Got some work done today. I have 2 parts left on the tutorial and my deadline is either the 30th or the 31st, so that gives me 1-3 days to fix it up after I'm finished with the tuts.

OK, done with the tuts (kinda). Just need to finish putting everything up and make sure that it all fits together.

Yes, finally done with the modeling! :attn: The poly count on this monster is 69,835 without it being duped over.

I just need to dupe it over, sew it up, smooth it, and set up the render. Hopefully my computer will work after that. ;)

I'll probably start the texturing on Monday. Here's the wire:

Here's the finished model. I'm gonna try to start on the UV mapping tomorrow, instead of Monday, just to get a head start on it.

The usual:

If you look on my site, you’ll find the HD pic (which I would highly recommend doing).

C&C welcome!

Thanks for pointing that out! I can't believe I forgot that.

not bad at all but can you post closer screen grabs of the different parts of the ship? oh and also check this out i think you might like the ship on here http://www.planetx.nl/

lealar 31-01-2008 06:11 PM

Well, nice model and good idea. hope final render!

What parts would you like to see?

Man, that's a nice ship. I wonder how many guys it took to make all that stuff.

Mayaniac 01-02-2008 03:01 AM

This came together really nicely! Good Job!

Looking forward to seeing the texturing.

Just got finished with UV mapping the sails:

mirek03 01-02-2008 02:51 PM

looks great.., if you want wake as it goes in the water.., i suspect if you parent a volume field at the bow and set a collision with the softbody passive water .., you should get a nice wake.., though its just a thought 9dont know if it will work ) i had looking at your thread.., you could always use the examples.., but you dont learn the guts of much with presets

looks great,.., all of it

Rhetoric Camel 02-02-2008 03:31 AM

nice work, kind of makes me want to do the pirate ship.
Are you planning on turning the ropes and sails into nCloth's?

Although I have no idea what you're talking about, thanks a lot! :D

Thanks, Mike. No, I've never really tinkered around with nCloth.

mirek03 02-02-2008 07:20 AM

hey it was just something i thought you might like to look into.., try a drag field with inherit velocity ON.., or select your boat and connect the field to it using 'use selected sourse.., try an example and emulate it.., theres lots of things

shwenkerbean 03-02-2008 07:35 AM

Who,

I have been watching this post the last few days. I like your model. It seems simple, yet complex all in the same breath. We've gotta see some texturing. Stop messing with us. Textures are gonna make that look great.

Thanks shwenkerbean. I can't wait for texturing too! I'm thinking of going for a black worn-out look.

I'll be getting a new tablet this week, so I'll post up on what I think of it when I get it.

Just mapped a couple more pieces:
