guess the Device

I've started to model this device. It may be a little hard at this stage too see what it is, but I'll keep posting new renders.

Can you guess what it is?

jsprogg 05-02-2008 12:15 AM

I don't know what it is , but judging by your past few models this also came out of the Ark is is most likely pre 1980...lol

DJbLAZER 05-02-2008 01:21 AM

haha.... you are almost correct, it's very early 80's :D

mirek03 05-02-2008 02:08 AM

im guessing a keyboard synth

05-02-2008 02:10 AM

A Swedish power adapter? :p

Haha.. not a power adapter.. mirek is in the ball park..

Here's some more.

gubar 05-02-2008 02:31 AM

Drum Machine?

05-02-2008 02:34 AM

You're tricky, naming the images device! :p

Rhetoric Camel 05-02-2008 02:37 AM

looks like it could be a 4-track or something of the sorts

Agent_Dick 05-02-2008 02:52 AM

Obviously it is a hammer. :attn:

Seriously, though, is it a mixing panel?

mirek03 05-02-2008 03:15 AM

yea.., the roland 303 0r 808.., famous.., its in that area.., its been a whole but im guessing the 303.., if its the roland at all

yes.., gubar.., a drum machine

we can blame ALL duff 'music' on the one little machine

duff duff duff.., ect

(i think :) )

DJbLAZER 05-02-2008 04:02 AM

and the winner is... mirek! Yes, it's a Roland TB-303 and it's a real classic, used in thousands of techno tracks. But it's not a drum machine. TR-808 is a drum machine though.

Here's how it sounds like:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:TB303.ogg

And I did some more modelling.

mirek03 05-02-2008 05:52 AM

cool.., actually i knew (really :) )it could emulate bass (its a bass machine) but i thought its main function was drums.., can it do drums at all?? there is many a software synth made with this machine in mind.., the most famous i think being 'rebirth' (i think).., there is a free emulation of this in the mag 'computer music' called.., obviously.., cM-303' along with a complete FREE workstation and all the things needed to be very 'cool' :)

sounds great and its free. it is a VST so it sits nicely in any DAW

maybe this info is helpful to someone??

DJbLAZER 05-02-2008 11:12 AM

No it doesn't do any drums...

Rebirth is free as well nowadays. http://www.rebirthmuseum.com/

mirek03 05-02-2008 12:33 PM

mate you have made the 'very cool' grade using such devices... :)

Damn this thing has a lot of holes, all done now though.

A know is born...

The other knobs are a bit tricky... but I CAN DO IT!

mirek03 05-02-2008 11:41 PM

but can you dance to it..,?? :)

nice opportunities to do some nice lighting or?and renders eh??

DJbLAZER 06-02-2008 09:07 PM

That last knob is a real nightmare to model. I tried a couple of times but failed miserably...so I started texturing and playing with some materials until I got an idea how to do it.

mirek03 06-02-2008 10:53 PM

is the texture a projection??

gubar 07-02-2008 01:01 AM

Looks really nice so far.

Can I ask you how you created the metal shader for the dials? They look good and I've found metal tricky to create.

Also, could we see a wire frame?

One more question - when you model, do you always model with smoothing in mind? I ask because I see that some people model using bevels and aim not to smooth, and some create a base for smoothing... it depends on the purpose I know, I'm just interested and learning about different approaches.

thanks,

gubar

mirek: Since the panel is just a plane (with holes) it's a plane projection... if that's what you mean, and then painted in Photoshop.

gubar: Since I render in Maxwell the shader differs completely from Mental Ray or Maya Software, but I downloaded a gold foil shader from Maxwells site which I have modified.

I always try to model with smoothing in mind since if you only use some bevels and the model is "unsmoothable" you've set a limit to how close you can render the model.

Here's some wires

wire

mirek03 07-02-2008 04:21 AM

if you only use some bevels and the model is "unsmoothable"0

can you explain what you mean by that.., im having some trouble with smoothing at the moment.., to the point that it has wasted so much time its ridiculous.., and i have noticed that just because maya 208 has a smooth preview.., it certainly doesn't mean thats how it will look when iys smoothed

as a matter of fact im going to start a new thread because im having a lot of trouble smoothing and getting very odd results.., verts sticking up all over the place.., like they have smoothed in the wrong direction

yes., i just wondered if you used a projection as a texture because of course it being a flat plan was sort of begging for it.

:)

Haven't tried smooth pervis since I use Maya 8.5.

You should do some reading and learn the basics of polygon modeling to understand how things will smooth.

With "unsmoothable" I mean that the model isn't modelled with smoothing in mind and thus will look like crap when smoothed.

Finished the button panel texturing.

arran 07-02-2008 06:44 PM

ouch - that is looking very nice DJ. you might want to send that over to afx. :)

DJbLAZER 07-02-2008 09:17 PM

Thanks arran! hmm... afx?

arran 08-02-2008 10:50 AM

afx is a musician who uses the TB-303 and other roland synthesizers in his work. he is also rumored to own the extremely rare and expensive Yamaha GX1. definitely worth checking out. :)

DJbLAZER 08-02-2008 11:11 AM

Oh, that's a synonym for Aphex Twin :D, yeah I have a couple of his ablums, nice ambient tunes...

So, the texturing is done except that logo :) that I can't find the font for, so I'll just have to hand paint it... and obviously some positioning is needed on some places.

THX1138 09-02-2008 08:59 PM

Always top quality work DJbLAZER!

OK.., good idea.., never thought of that, maybe i'll ask my teacher now that im at CGI school.., he might know something about it too!!
thanks :)
