bristol blenheim

Hi guys,
My course is now finished so its time to work up some old pieces (texturing and rendering) as well as creating some new pieces.
This is the start of a mk1 bristol blenheim light bomber used during world war 2. I'll be initially keeping it low res and then upping to a high res version to generate normal maps etc for a game model and realistic rendering.

Bristol Blenheim:

Reference plane setup. I found some really good blueprints but they needed a fair bit of work to match and update with extra detail etc. This bit took by far the longest time to sort so far:

Basic body (using preview smooth):

Engines blocked in:

More to come :)

hey
looks really nice
im not a big fan of airplane and those things...
but when it comes to 3D im totaly fan
and with all those image reference im sure it will be perfect and your modeling is looking good now
cant wait to see the final :)

t1ck135 14-03-2008 02:04 AM

oops, missed the current view:

arran 14-03-2008 03:11 AM

have you got enough reference images t1ck? ;) i guess you can never have too many!

looks like a great start - must be nice to be done with your course.

t1ck135 14-03-2008 03:20 AM

lol arran, I spent half the day yesterday trawling the internet for photo reference and the other half chopping those blueprints up and resizing, altering and marking them for later use ;)

Yeah its great to have finished and take a little time off to relax and work on a portfolio.
I've got some development ideas for encompassing the flocking and traffic tools with another *hush hush* one that will give people a lot of power to do some cool things but at the minute its back to good old modelling with an aim to really push the texturing and shading part that is always neglected :D

Hows it going with your various projects? You've been knocking some cool stuff out recently but I haven't had the time to keep track.

Just added some more tail parts to the model:

arran 14-03-2008 03:32 AM

:) ha - your references look excellent - this will be a great texturing project and a lot of fun to build.

just posted about 5 renders of my office scene. there are a few things here and there that i could adjust but i want to move on to zbrush for now.

looking forward to seeing that portfolio and future bflocking and btraffic projects. :)

gster123 14-03-2008 03:58 AM

Looking really nice mate!

Fast going too!!

Mayaniac 14-03-2008 04:02 AM

This looks like a pretty sweet start. Nice choice of plane too. I would have picked the Lancaster myself ;)

Anyway, glad to hear you completed your course! So congrats on that...... though this may sound bad, but what was your course? (I guess I wasn't around when you started it)

Anyway, nice work! Looking forward to seeing the final product.

-Steven

t1ck135 14-03-2008 05:00 AM

arran - I'll be having a look in two secs at your progress :)

steve - cheers :) maybe pop a lion or two in the cockpit?

steven - Thanks :) yeah I was tempted to go for the more well known ones as there is a ton of reference info but decided on a slightly less common one. I'm playing IL2 sturmovik online a lot at the minute and its a pity that you cant fly this baby.
The course was a Masters Degree in Creative Technology at Leeds Met Uni (UK) which didnt have everything I wanted but was spread about and made me get some of the old 2D digital skills going again. Fun bits in the course were making the warcones game and creating the flocking and traffic tool. The rest was just hard work for the 13 months of the course.

Jay 14-03-2008 05:31 AM

hey Si

nice going mate, I always found the Bristol Beaufighter a better looking plane than this one though, its very similar but has a better looking cockpit/front end area. This one reminds me of the old WW2 gliders...

nice job though
Jay

t1ck135 14-03-2008 07:43 AM

cheers Jay :)
yeah the beaufighter has a cool small nose and cockpit area, 'cuter' if you could call a warplane that ;)
Depending on how this baby turns out when textured I might go back and make the mk4 or mk5 version with the extended nose and possibly with the extra turret under that.

Here's the last bit for the night, cutting the engine shape out to fit the wing correctly and opening it up so that I can add the undercarriage (the wheel remains visible in that oval gap when its retracted). Got a few edges not smoothing perfectly but its not an issue yet:

Jay 14-03-2008 03:18 PM

Nice Si

Looks very clean, could you post up some wires when you get the chance?

good work mate
Jay

t1ck135 14-03-2008 05:16 PM

cheers Jay, wires as requested :)

I'm concentrating on the smoothed vertice positions so the unsmoothed might look a bit funny around the cockpit untill it gets detailed and the wings as the cuts need evenly spacing.

and a bit of the undercarriage. I dont have many good references for the exact detail of the pistons.
This'll be the last update for a couple of days as I'm going to try and get down to see the terracotta army display in London :)

Mayaniac 15-03-2008 01:09 AM

Wow, this has come together very nicely, and in a very short period of time! ;)

I'm really looking forward to seeing this fully textured!

BUT Seeing all this modeling is giving me an itch, but I haven't had time for Maya much recently. Mostly been doing the VSC#, and I just got a copy of Flash..... So I'm hopefully gonna try some Action Scripting..... should be fun!

Anyway (Didn't mean to hijack ;) )

great work!

t1ck135 17-03-2008 08:30 PM

Mayaniac - cheers :) and no probs, sounds like you're getting into some good coding stuff. Actionscript is quite a nice language as it learns you object oriented techniques and has similarities to javascript and java. I did some protoype work for my flocking tool in flash and it helped me to get a better understanding of things before diving into Maya and learning Python.

Here's another update. Its one of the 9 radial elements of the engine and still has plenty of detail to be added. Didnt know whether I'd get into modelling the complex areas but its really interesting to see how all the elements work together to drive the engine :)

Most of the large lower central piece consists of heat disipation fins (like on a heatsink on your computer CPU) so I dont yet know the best way to tackle that.

http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/pl...ne_radial1.jpg

http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/pl...ne_radial2.jpg

and a visual to show you how it will fit together once completed

Simon

t1ck135 18-03-2008 09:46 PM

I managed to get some time on this today and decided to actually model all the detail on the radial cylinder (got some pretty decent photos of the engine).
Here are a couple of angles on the current progress.

t1ck135 19-03-2008 12:38 PM

here's an update on the radial cylinder and the beginnings of the rest of the engine. I'ts going to have some struts in front and between the gaps and then (visually) it will be done.

wires (getting a bit high now but I've got lowres geometry that might be usfeul for normal mapping):

arran 19-03-2008 01:20 PM

!!!!

Simon - this is looking mad - i really like the way you are putting this together - all of the details are very cool.

nice job mate!

mastone 19-03-2008 02:34 PM

You don't care much about the polycounts do you?......LOL
Looks great man:beer:

t1ck135 19-03-2008 04:27 PM

cheers arran :) I decided to up the detail quite a bit for a portfolio piece. The really crazy bit will be generating all the divots along every panel on the plane - I'm thinking (and hoping) a generic strip could be created and then normal mapped and placed where required

thanks mastone, hehe polycount whats that? ;)
its about 90% instanced geometry at the minute but if this was non instanced and smoothed I think my machine would seriously start crawling

Here's an update on the engine with added struts and a bit of tidying. I've placed it in the engine bay but it might need a little resizing. I'm thinking next might be the external engine exhausts and the cylindrical radiator flaps.

http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/pl.../19_engine.jpg

Simon

Mayaniac 19-03-2008 04:40 PM

Well I'm disappointed.... theres simple just not enough detail in there ;)

Looks great! Though, I can imagine that your computer gets slow when you smooth all the parts down for rendering. I would recommend using the Approximation editor to smooth the Geo during Rendering.

Great work! Keep it up!

t1ck135 19-03-2008 10:28 PM

hehe, cheers mayaniac :) Yeah it'll probably run like a dog but I'm hoping to normal map some of the model to minimise on that

Here's probably the final update to the engine with a few more pipes and wires etc. I'm now moving onto the engine cover and the detail around that (a lot less than the engine!).

t1ck135 20-03-2008 06:07 PM

cheers steve :)

here's some more progress but got a bit bogged down today. think I should have concentrated with the externals but its really interesting learning how the internals are built ;)

detailing on the underside of the engine cowling: (slightly rough and ready as the second panel from the front would constantly be taken on and off for servicing/repairs etc)

Mayaniac 21-03-2008 12:02 PM

This is getting better and better! I love the detail in the engine!

No Crits....

Great Work!

t1ck135 21-03-2008 12:32 PM

more detail to come mayaniac ;)

here's some progress on the central wing support area and wing supports. Some of the struts will disappear/be moved to allow space for the gun pods and whatever else sits in the outer wing areas.

Sweet detailing there mate looking forward to see some more:beer:

DJbLAZER 21-03-2008 03:22 PM

You better make the plane of glass or some other transparent material otherwise all that internal stuff is a waste :p

Good stuff indeed!

NeoStrider 21-03-2008 03:32 PM

maybe he plans on blowing the crap out of it in an animation and having all those parts fly off!

gster123 21-03-2008 06:04 PM

Si, dude,

You starting to loose it??? Thats one detailed model!

You gonna texture it?

Jay 21-03-2008 06:20 PM

Nice!!

We should have a model of the month forum!! This would get my vote for all the lovely sick detail!!!!

Si, this is very cool my friend, well done.

One small question...are you going to uv it?:bandit:

Jay

t1ck135 21-03-2008 09:05 PM

cheers mastone

hehe, good idea DJBlazer ;) I think I'll do some cross sections and cutaways to make sure that the detail is seen

Neostrider - if that was easy I would definitely have a go

Steve - its getting a little crazy but I'm learning all about the different plane parts ;)

Cheers Jay :) that'd be quite a good idea to encourage people more

UV'ing? not for the internal parts lol! there's just too much so some generic shaders will have to do :D
For the external skin however, I think that'll get a UV treatment

Quick update but not much added really as I've been hunting for better refs of where and how the fuel tanks are set in the wings.
The outermost little box is where 2 lights sit
The next box in is where the browning machine gun will sit
The next box in is the outer fuel tank (I think)
Then the inner box (just inside the wheel section) is the inner fuel tank.
It just needs some struts going up the wings and the flaps and the blocky bit at the back of the wing sorting before its time to move onto another bit (cockpit?)

http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/pl...wing_parts.jpg

Simon

NeoStrider 21-03-2008 09:33 PM

that's a dinky assed fuel tank... even if it was on both wings, how long does it fly, 20 seconds?

or is there another fuel reserve somewhere else on the plane?

t1ck135 22-03-2008 05:19 AM

hehe, I'm glad you brought that point up NeoStrider. After a little reading it turns out that the mark1 model that I'm doing didnt have the outer fuel tank, just the inner bigger ones so they will be removed and the parts added to the future mark 4 model ;)

- Mk1, range around 950 miles with 1000lb bombload (2 x 140 gallon inner wing tanks
- Mk4, range around 1450 miles with additional 2 x 94 gallon outer tanks

Apparently with the Mk4 models the additional weight was too great for the plane to land with near full tanks so they had to install an emergency 'dump fuel' option.

Here's a reference picture that better shows the size of the tank area - the big gap between the wheel and central part
